Reason for application:

I've been playing Space Station 13 for a while now, really only on the Goonstation servers, and I while I thought I had enough experience to throw myself into the ring last time, I was really wrong. I had very limited experience and only played a handful of roles. Now that I've had good time on most of them (except for engineering and mining, those hurt my brain), I think my varied experience helps me understand a bit more what security can do to not only keep order on the station, but help others realize their goals in playing. Additionally, I think taking the plunge and joining roleplay servers as my go-to Space Station experience has broadened by horizons and made me better at the all-encompassing "yes and."

Security experience (300 word minimum):

I first started playing security maybe 4-5 years ago in 2021-2022, it was my main role for a very long time, and it felt fun to engage in the chaos on the station. My security experience has been the vehicle by which to learn how to engage with other people's roleplay in a way that is not destructive, but constructive. Security's role is often perceived as one that comes in to sort of put a "stop" to things, but with the right mindset security is just another leg of the roleplay, and a pillar of what makes the station experience chaos in a fun and manageable way.

A big part of that is working as part of a team. While everyone has a vision of their character as some John McClain hero going through the station to defeat the villain on their own, I'd be lying to say I didn't start in the same headspace, a good security officer knows how to let others take the spotlight, and operate less like action heroes and more like a team of adventurers.

Part of working on the team is knowing when you need to be the one conducting patrol, even if it isn't the glamorous, dealing with a clown that slips and falls a few too many times into stealing some materials for a prank instead of the vampire when others have it under control, or sitting at the desk and running contraband licensing or database/arrest status management in an efficient manner.

Beyond that, there is a need for clear communication and taking leadership roles when asked. When an HoS is not on board, it becomes apparent that there are many perspectives that are all equally valid, and part of being an effective member of security is not just listening to the captain, which is important, but listening to each other as well, so everyone can have a good time.

To sum it all up, I think my security experience has been a little bit of everything, and picking up all the information I can from a bunch of different perspectives, not just about the role but about the game itself!

Answer two or more of the following:
  • What advice would you give to other sec players?

I think it's centered on one philosophy: have fun as security. What I mean by that is that you need remember everyone is here to have fun, and the goal of security, in my mind at least, is to ensure that folks are having a good time without necessarily trampling on the fun of others. People come to Space Station 13, and this server, for a level of chaos, but it needs to be managed chaos. How does that apply to you? Well, don't be a robot (that's the silicons' jobs!). You have to realize that Space Law is about preserving that fun, but it is also within your power to extend courtesy to people to ensure they're having as much fun as you (and the rest of the crew is). Don't kill that antagonist just because they slipped up frame one, and don't be afraid to be more of a "mediator" than "security." I think I've even seen someone give out swirlies or make people do exercises instead of brig time, that way it becomes a unique rp opportunity instead of just sitting with your hands in your lap, and that encapsulates the ethos rather well. It's all about managed fun.
  • What was one of your favorite security moments? (Either playing as a sec officer or interacting with one)

This happened some years ago and I still think about it. It was an admin round in which there was a zombie infection. Playing as Bone McRuff, a security officer, me and the rest of the office began to slowly deal with people experiencing strange diseases that resulted in violence. We worked closely with medical in an attempt to detain and medicate. Eventually, it just began to spread too much and chaos erupted. A buddy system, that was our solution to ensure accountability and efficiency amongst the officers. My partner and I got along swimmingly, keeping each other safe and pulling aggression from the zombie hoards when needed. The HoS made it abundantly clear that the station was overrun and space diner was our only solution to keep safe. We followed. In that moment, the head of security came clean that a nemesis of theirs, some scientist, had been the one to manufacture the disease and had been calling for the Head's return to station to finish what had begun between them. Naturally, we accompanied them, and began paving a clear path. However, I was not so lucky as to get away unscathed. I waited until alone and I told my Buddy that I had likely been compromised. Fever, shivers, and a slowing down of speech. It was all there. In the end, I asked them to do what was needed, and they had slayed me where I stood. In their kindness, though, even in an overrun station, they made their way to the remaining roboticists and pleaded for my return as a silicon unit. Before I knew it, the light had shown in my eyes once more, B0N35 the cyborg had begun to walk the station as a security unit, but with fractured memories. One thing he knew was true, though? That one security officer was his "buddy," even now.
Answer one or more of the following fun questions (because it's important for the HoS to be fun):

[*]What's a security gimmick that you've ran or wanted to run?
[*]
There are two that come to mind, with one certain to be less popular than the other. First, I think combining my HoP experience as Ignacio Iguana with my Security experience as Bones McRuff could lead to a sort of DMV for enforcement. An officer will need to fill out paperwork for baton use, need to ensure people have permits for "tomfoolery," and complete "Patrol completion reports" after every loop around the station. I can see it being a bit annoying, though, which is why I would ensure the rest of command and security are okay with the idea, and lift the bureaucracy with an "emergency permit for less bureaucracy."

[*]Second, I think a fun bit could be the "Wizard HoS," who is not a wizard at all, but is fixated on thinking they are. Running around casting lightning bolt with stun rounds, and using the "staff of paralysis" instead of a stun baton. Naturally, the punishments would be flavored as being "taken to the dungeon" or community service as "testing potions made by the apothecaries" (chemistry or bartender), and contracting "strong adventurers" to handle perceived threats (mostly imaginary, to feed into the theory that security is delusional). The officers would be knights with knightly titles and unique uniforms so they may sally forth and protect the Monarch's Realm from dastardly devils and villains!

Previous bans (while this will not affect your application lying about it will):

None at all, though I think I have gotten a warning or two in the my first year or so of playing.

Thanks for reading,
