Reason for application:
I'd been thinking of making this application for a while, but what made me post it was a round where the sec team, without a HoS, was fairly inexperienced, yet dealt with a number of antagonists and a difficult Captain. Some bad calls were made, the armory was opened, and one of the sec assistants ended up stabbing a clown whose only crime was using their announcement computer. I feel like if I had joined as a HoS instead of as a Detective, I'd have stepped up to lead the charge and keep things under control right from the start, rather than when things had already gone awry.
Security experience (300 word minimum):
Before I ever played security, I've played a lot of AI. In playing AI, you learn a lot about restraint and controlling the pace of a round. Just because you see a vampire staring deeply into the eyes of a poor staffie in the first 5 minutes of a shift, doesn't mean you immediately have to report it.
One of my first memories of playing sec is being chewed out by a HoS for tasering and arresting an antagonist in the middle of a conversation with said HoS. Their words hit me quite hard and made me stop playing security for a while, but in the end I've taken their advice to heart and I'm glad that they said what they did. You always try to talk first. You always start with the least amount of escalation possible. You take where you are in the shift into account, giving antagonists a chance to recover if they're caught early and finishing off threats once they've had a chance to establish themselves as a threat to begin with.
In my latest, and longest stint of playing the game, I started playing Granny Ogg as security, often taking desk duty while sipping coffe and chitchatting with passerbys. On this character, I became pretty damn fast at operating SecMate and started seeing the importance of good comms.
My next character ended up becoming more or less a sec main, a lizard with a pompadour who eventually became Franklin Fulton. With Franklin there haven't yet been any huge revelations about security, but it's instead all about mastering and fine tuning the fundamentals. Challenging myself to determine what call is the right one when direction from above isn't available, instructing and helping other security when they are less experienced, and knowing what to prioritize when there's four things happening at once.
At this point, I feel comfortable enough in the role that I feel I would make a good HoS.
Answer two or more of the following:
What advice would you give to other sec players?
Know when to let something go. Does the clown keep giving you the slip, and is a real slippery bastard to catch? It's better to let the clown go, than have the crew revolt against you.
What was one of your favorite security moments? (Either playing as a sec officer or interacting with one)
An admin was playing an omnitraitor clown causing absolute havoc on the station. Me and the Captain tried the whole shift to deal with the lethal funny man, to no avail despite multiple shootouts. At one point, the clown fell asleep after having eaten a bunch of drugs, and we tried to drag the snoring monstrosity to the Crematorium VERY QUIETLY before it woke up. Of course, a random miner decided to attack it with a toy sword, ruining our Operation Bedtime.
Inspired by how close we got, the Captain managed to get ahold of more candy, putting down a trail leading up to and into the Crematorium oven itself. The clown horror actually fell for his plan and slipped right in... and then shrugged off the hellfire like it was nothing.
Resigning to our failures, I approached the Captain and suggested that maybe... maybe we had to fight fire with fire. Maybe.. we had to become clowns ourselves. And a such, I went to Cargo and said the funniest line of the shift. "AI... order me a crate of comedy equipment..."
We never managed to stop the clown, but me and the Captain spent the rest of the shift squeaking around in our clown shoes cringing every time a crew member saw us. In the end, it turns out that the clown's weakness.. was the comedy of the toy sword the miner had attacked them with all along.
Describe any differences in your playstyle when part of a full security team and when being the only security officer.
I am very rarely ever the only security officer, but I would like to make a note that when a team is missing a leading role, I will attempt to step up to direct things, delegate officers, and make decisions regarding punishments. I belive that one of the most important things about playing security is being able to communicate with your team effectively, sharing information and spreading out duties.
