Intersecting ranch and genetics is a really good idea, critters have been gene-compliant for a while I'm pretty sure. Hiding genes in specific chickens would be interesting, or having chickens that evolve because they have a specific gene.
How about a gene that lets people lay eggs corresponding to the chicken the gene is from. You could have one of those genes for each chicken type, that only spawns in those specific chickens. A long enough cooldown is probably enough to not make the rancher obsolete. Make it activate on fart.
