I've been spectating Cynthia a lot since they've submitted their application. I'm really impressed by their behaviour on the security team, and I believe they would make a wonderful addition to the HoS roster. Here are some things that I've noticed, in no particular order:
- Delegation: I frequently see Cynthia delegate tasks without and within her purview. The 'correct' members of the security team are requested to help with various security related tasks (for example: Calling the detective to gather evidence at the scene of the crime/interrogation). More importantly, in my opinion, she will delegate tasks to the crew where appropriate. For example, if there is a supernatural antag on station, such as a wraith, she will make several attempts to involve the Chaplain. I've noticed that there is a tendency for rounds to fall into a rhythm of: Security vs. Antagonist. Making the effort to include non-security members helps to involve all players in the fun for the round, and it gives the appropriate escalation necessary to allow an antagonist to build up their threat and respond accordingly.
- Teaching: I've witnessed Cynthia set aside time to help teach newer security players the ropes and slowly work their way up to a full fledged security officer. She's very willing to impart her knowledge to newer players joining the force, and she demonstrates patience and understanding while they learn. Something I've really liked is that she will bring newer players along with her on patrols; she gives them the practice needed to make arrests. This also helps to make newer security players to feel welcome on the team. They're not JUST there to do the paperwork and busy work, they are a member of security like everyone else and can contribute in big ways. Developing that confidence in newer players can go a big way to making a welcoming space.
- Losing with Grace: Cynthia is a puritan, so death for her can mean total removal from her role in the round. Despite this, Cynthia will frequently put herself in harms way to protect the crew. This means that, sometimes, she will be removed from the round very quickly. I have seen her accept this with a lot of grace. The most recent example I can think of was her trying to bring someone in for questioning. When the antag made a dash for an escape into maintenance, she followed and was quickly gunned down with AP rounds from a revolver. This kind of situation can absolutely be frustrating, but she took it in stride, quickly making comments that she had fun and was aware it could get bad going after the antag solo. I think this resilience and this grace at losing is something we want to see from a HoS. We're not going to "win" every encounter, and as the HoS, you can sometimes get a big target on your back. Being able to accept that loss with a smile and a bow sets a wonderful example for others that the true game is an interesting story.
- Role-playing and Approachability: Cynthia will approach, and can be approached by, any single person on the station. I've seen her interact with new and old faces alike. Taking the time to engage with each person is incredibly important, especially since Cynthia plays on the RP servers. It allows for fun and interesting situations to develop. I think it can be quite easy to fall into a pattern of only interacting with other security members once you begin to play security a lot, but this isn't something I've seen from Cynthia. She makes an effort to welcome people into conversations and into solving problems. She's willing to take risks exposing herself to danger if it means involving another player in a role playing experience. Remembering that the HoS is just another actor in the play, so to speak, keeps the round alive and moving.
For these reasons, and more, I think Cynthia would be an incredible HoS. This is a clean +1 from me.
