A new "makeup" layer shouldn't be that hard to add, if all this would be, conceptually, is a collection of images to overlay onto the face. Going beyond that, I think you could reasonably have a mix-n-match deal where you can select different styles for different elements - e.g what color and shape to paint around your eyes. Due to the pixel graphics these choices would be very hard to notice though, so the simpler collection of faces might be more reasonable.
Additionally, clown-clumsiness should NOT cause you to mess up your paint, and in fact should allow expert, deft application and even removal of clown face paint. Without the trait the process takes longer and may be prone to failure. Or maybe not.
