You asked thoughts and I'm good with this! but I also feel like one method to gets eggs out there is more direct: Give the Rancher a little "egg hutch" vendor like this.

EDIT: And sell sweaters, scarves too (Or maybe just build player vendors, but I like the aesthetic of a little hutch)
