Since the joke here it's pee-pods, makes more sense that golden pea pods contain actual piss instead of pure ammonia
Balance, wise, pure ammonia is a bit too strong as botanists can do instant-grow plants with little effort. Making them need a extra reaction would make it more interesting.
Also, having urine opens the way to more chemical reactions, options and funy hijinks
