Knowing the admin that wrote them and having played plenty of CCGs, they're meant to be played as something resembling Yu Gi Oh.
That said, the card text is also purposely ambiguous and sometimes contradictory/poor. The fact that no cohesive rule set seems possible is part of the joke, which is very true to the YGO anime
