Perhaps make it so that all of the beneficial symptoms (except maybe some very rare/powerful ones) are always available and are noticeable, such as from messages saying "You realize that you're not breathing anymore, and yet your lungs are still filled with air." But, as to not stray from the original topic, a reduction of the severity of plagues should be implemented.
