Ooh, like a form of paranormal space tag, or spooky hot potato. The IT holds within an imaginary friend who will kill them if they don't shift their psychospiritual soul-tag to another person, making them be IT. No tagbacks.
Another way to do it would be to lean more into the space STD angle and make it an actual disease, where the only cure is to infect someone else. Gotta have some incentive not to just scan yourself and jump out an airlock, maybe super powers?
Could even work well as a secondary antagonist -- an entity that isn't quite as powerful as our main badguys, but still a hostile antagonist, and serves to be less an imminent existential threat, and more a round-long turbo-annoyance that'll end up killing you if you ignore it, like a clown that'll explode if you don't pay enough attention to it.
