Rework Instant-Kill Hotwired Doors
#1
i've always kind of hated how during a super bad hotwire, just brushing up against a door has a chance to instantly kill you with zero warning and disintegrate your body entirely. it's really funny as a concept but 9/10 times, getting punished with perma-death if you weren't clone scanned, just for touching a door without insuls feels terrible and unfair.

i think this is especially bad for mid-joins and fresh clones, where you can just die immediately after leaving the arrival shuttle from no fault of your own, and leaving medbay to just touch a door again and immediately turn to dust. i think it's also noteworthy bringing up how this sucks really bad for other antagonists too if they didn't take part in / weren't aware of such a serious hotwire, for instance there was a round i played earlier where a changeling touched a hotwired door and instantly died, no headspider, and basically lost their entire ling round for again, effectively just not wearing insulated gloves

this is especially worse for the RP servers, as permanent instakills that destroy your corpse are really unfitting and unpleasant to endure. no attempts can be made from medical personnel, no real escalation, immediate warning or sign that if you brush against this door, you may irrevocably die, forever.

in my opinion, a good way to balance this might be to just remove the instakill, instead make it knock out/incapacitate someone for a bit along with the other damages and effects that come with touching a heavily electrified door, or make it extremely obvious that if you touch this door once, you WILL die. i personally prefer the first option to allow for more scenarios to come out of it and avoid instakills altogether to prevent it from being so punishing, but of course it's not up to me :p

would love to hear some thoughts/ideas & discussion for this!

While I‘m also not a fan of instakills at all, 150MW going through your body should absolutely be lethal. I just don‘t like the way it turns your entire body into a few piles of ash. I‘d suggest changing it a bit to increase the power threshold required to leave no remains. I‘m not sure where it is right now, but I would like for it to be higher. At lower power levels, I could imagine being zapped either throwing around or downright burning all arms, legs, and maybe the head. That would leave cloneable and obvious remains, whilst still keeping the powerful aspect of bzzt, u ded.

Now, another issue with high-power-hotwires is that, for the average John Staffman, there‘s basically no counterplay besides wearing insuls. He’s walking down the hallway, when suddenly, he’s turned into a pile of dust. That‘s why I‘d suggest an indicator, like a thin electricity „beam“ or something, that goes toward where the big bzzt will happen, spawning some small sparks around that location.
It would give people some time to move out of harm‘s way.

Next, doors. I‘d suggest a similar thing, an indicator showing that the door is electrified. Some sparks coming out of the maintenance panel, maybe.

Hotwiring has levels of warnings going on. It starts with APCs electrical sparking like mad.

But in my opinion... The moment APCs start sparking and you stop touching doors cause non insuls is .. Just as bad.

What I want for hotwired doors is different levels on it.
1: Door opens and closes really fast when walking into it. (So if you go through your get squished, not shocked)
This instantly makes you "DO NOT TOUCH THE DOOR" without killing someone, it puts em in near death sure.. but it's funny and it doesn't kill you.

2: The door opens and closes instantly when walking into it. But touching it WILL instantly zap you to ash.
You had your warning. If APCs sparks and doors open and close too fast... DO NOT TOUCH THEM.

The reason I want to remove the whole: "Hotwired doors walking into them shocks you"
Is because even if you know.. you might get shoved or bumped into it and BOOM YOU'RE DEAD. This is uncommon but I have accidentally opened doors by shovers before. And now imagine you telling everyone DO NOT TOUCH THE DOORS! But here comes Shovey Mcstafferson to fix the door but he shoves you into it, killing you.

But by giving not only clear visuals signs but interaction signs... Suddenly bumping into a "door" won't kill you. But the moment you go "Huh.. odd" And you touch it by clicking on it, you die.

That's what I think.

Agree the instant kill from touching a door sucks

I think it's kinda funny but I agree with maybe making the door not vaporise your body.

I think instead of a instakill on a high MW, you should go into cardiac arrest, so it's still FATAL if untreated

People turning into ash should probably be removed though, maybe leave that exclusively for a high MW wired grille instead

It should require manually placing down a bunch of synth rubber cables if you want to hotwire. It'd take a bunch more effort to do so, and you would have to wire every individual APC so that you can't instantly turn the entire station into a deathtrap.

Well you should have already known that the engine is hotwired from the APCs constantly shocking people. Thats your clue to get insulated gloves and be careful around doors.
I do agree that maybe ashing from the doors shouldn't be a thing. Save ashing for power gloves.
I DO think that high power door shocks should kill. That much power going through a door and shocking you should absolutely drop your ass into gasping crit. Just like IRL. Well actually getting a current like that through you won't even let you gasp. You can't do anything. Just dropped.

I kinda like the instagib but absolutely not how it is now.
Currently:
Less than 2.5MW: No elecgib
2.5MW or more: 20% chance of elecgib

the problem is that any halfway decent setup can reach the threshold

Chance for elecgib should start somewhere around 1GW and scale with higher wattage. And the doors should periodically emit sparks or something visible

Make it so that shocked door when you touch them send you flying back like when you touch someone when a arcfiend uses that polarization move. The distance you get sent flying back from and how much dmg you take on impact with a wall should scale with power. I just find it a funny idea watching someone fly down the hallway while screaming "DOOR SHOOCKEED!!!". I also agree that if doors are electrified to the extent that they can just one-shot you they should emit sparks or something.

I know its not realistic but seeing things get thrown backwards from shocks is a classic comedy movie staple and Id love to see it in SS13.

Pretty sure they do that currently if you don't roll the instagib

Light them on fire, too

make doors that get too charged melt(weld) themselves shut/open, and depower until apc reset. causes sufficient chaos. stops permaing people for not rushing / obtaining nerd gear, apcs still dangerous, minor door shocks still in.

You should get stuck to the door and electrocuted so someone has to pull you off
