This is my playstyle as captain (I like to chill on the bridge and direct people + observe through cameras and computers) and yes without the hygenine meter id never have any nudges to leave the bridge and go chill by the pool with a burger and a beer naked for 10 minutes with my ID on the floor near the pool.
Quote:This sums up how I feel about it overall tbh. People who are already willing to move around the station and take breaks already do so and will continue to do so. People who aren't don't suddenly agree to because of the stinklines -- that's why you see so many people with them once the shift time hits a certain point lol. If the ritual of going to wash off is important to you, then set an alarm for shift time 50 mins and go RP it out. For the huge chunk of people evident in this thread that it doesn't work on, who find it a distracting inconvenience that plays poorly with other game systems, it should be removed (pending rework or whatever).
This just tells me there should be stronger penalties for ignoring it, and also that the splashing the water on the floor and wiggling around shouldnt clean you.

One of the reasons I created my "Stress" mechanic. Cause I felt the hygiene doesn't do shit and is just annoying.
Hunger and thrist atleast did something but apperently is more ignored since it "doens't annoy" the player. (wait it does.. It says you are "DRY" and "STARVING" just not as much as hygiene)
But if players start acting like they have "braindamage" with opening doors and failing to do stuff... that forces them to comply.
But that would be too harsh. The thing is for Roleplay...and interaction. We shouldn't force penalities for NOT trying.
INSTED we should incentivice players to let someone do stuff for others to get desired results or rewards. But eh.. Derailed too much.
In the end it's better to develop a system that REWARDS players of doing insted of PUNISHING THEM.
I always said: "Eating and drinking gives micro buffs so you want to do it"
But hygiene does nothing but annoy you if ignored. What if being squeeky clean gives buffs like I don't know... slightly faster movement since you aren't distracted by smells.

Some ideas for hygenine buffs;
200-100% hygeine makes you a bit faster and provides a hygenie buff to others close by as you are radiant (let us overcharge hygeine by taking a hot bath or going in the pool for 30 seconds)
100-80% as before
Debuffs;
Below 30% and you start to make other people stinky by just being close to them
10% and under and you start to pause and vomit because you're nasty

I really do think hygiene is necessary, as others have mentioned it works as a great indicator of when you need to go and take a break around the station and get some RP in. Food and drink don't do this(at least not as effectively), since you can take the lunchbox trait and most workplaces have food and water stations you can use. This is also a visual indicator to others that you probably haven't left your workplace for a while, so it can allow other players to remind you if you get caught up in something and forget.
Just my two cents, as always I'm in support of hygiene as someone who hasn't really understood the "annoyance" angle of it at all, ever.

I think at the point where you're reminding people to take a break from pretending to do a job in a video game, you're better off just scrapping the feature. If you want a reminder to leave your office, set an alarm clock, I don't know. If you like showering, then you can still go shower twice a round, it's not like showers are being removed. And unlike hunger and thirst, hygiene is something that can get diminished by outside factors, raise your hand if you ever had to get surgery or had a guy explode next to you. So depending on the round you will find yourself showering 5-6 times.
Really think it's not that showering lets you remind people to take a break (take a break from what, having fun?), it's more so that showering encourages people to reprimand you for not doing your chores. Also 9/10 times people will just ignore you if you remind them to shower anyway.
Either way, I'm happy to see it go, especially in its current iteration.

And this is the ONE thing I hate the MOST of hygiene.
Someone splattered in blood on you? SHOWER TIME!
....Essentially if you don't want to get dirty too fast you know what you do?
You sit in a room.. on a chair.. and all motivations do not go down. And what's this? The most isolated departments do this EXACT THING cept mining?
GOLLY YEESH! The motivation is doing the reverse too :/
Anyway that's what i wanted to add.

Personally all for removing hygiene. It feels like a gross and immature joke at the expense of players and i don't mean immature as in "haha poop funny" mature but like in a "SS13 players don't shower lol" kind of way if you get what i mean. It's the wrong kind of immature.
I don't think it should be totally removed from the game though, i think the funniest compromise is to make it a trait from mutations or drugs so sometimes instead of getting cool super powers you just smell like shit forever. Maybe there is a kind of drug that can cause this too.
EDIT: it could also be funny if it was a spell Wizards had.

On one hand I agree that the hygiene motive doesn't add a lot to RP asside from having to visit the bathroom a couple times per shift or compulsively wash your hands. And the number of times I've personnaly been attacked by an antag in the showers is very low. Also this assume you care about stinklines. I do, but others don't.
The fact that some peoples here now expect others players to just ignore stinklines is the best argument for their removal to me. It means they disrupt RP instead of enabling it.
But on the other hand, there should still be a point to bathrooms and washing machines, other than station decorum. If your clothes are caked in shit and blood, there shoud be some for of consequence. Or maybe the other way around. A reward for freshly washed clothes like a sparkle effect or the perfume effect of lavender essence.

already a thing. they have 'freshly laundered' on them and keep you warm. goes to show how little any of these changes would help this motive
please stay on topic related to the motive, stop suggesting entire other things here plz

I'm in support of this actually as a way to keep stinklines in some form, perhaps as a possible side-effect of Pandemonium?

Someone suggested on the discord to have a trait that allows you to "opt-in" to the hygine motive. May be better than just scrapping it entirely until it's re-worked.

fun fact: during several rounds on RP i would quietly set the hygine motive to deplete at 1/100th of its normal rate (so you'd only really notice it if you took a bath in blood) and it was generally always an improvement
good pr, good change, good riddance

I'm late to this response, but that's a genius addition. A "Stinky" trait that gives +1, adds hygiene, but also makes it more punishing (less stamina regen?)

I can't believe so many people are coming together to argue about a stink meter of all things. Also yes, please remove it
