Revamp Container Artifacts
#1
Container Artifacts are cool in theory. What could aliens have stashed or imprisoned in this box? Dare you open it?

As it currently stands, there is extremely little variety in what a container artifact may contain. You're gonna get either an owl grenade, light grenade, artcells, or bee larvae. The entry for them on the wiki implies that they can contain hostile creatures, but I have literally never seen this happen, and by the looks of the code for their contents in the 2016 release, it's not a thing that can happen.

If you were to expand the list of things that can appear from Container Artifacts, what sort of things would you choose? Maybe limit suggestions to things that can't already be found in locked crates, to help keep container artifacts and crates distinct from one another. Or don't, it's up to you.

  • Beakers(not artifact beakers) full of secret chems
  • Pieces of paper with lore bits relating to the artifact type written on them
  • Make the container itself it's own reward(ie: capable of fitting in pockets but able to hold bulky-size items)

On the topic of them containing hostile NPCS: the wiki page for elite security mentions how apparently the now-jobless elite security officers are now waiting in space for a chance to kill their former employers. So how about when you open a container artifact, there is a chance that there was a T.U.R.D.S. commando who somehow got trapped inside to pop out and open fire. Successfully kill the commando, and you can loot him for T.U.R.D.S. equipment!

I have a feeling that the T.U.R.D.S. commandos are the space diner folk, but I'm going stop my derailing here. More variety is a good thing.

-an npc trader who sells you things
-random disease sample for virology to play with
-causes wormhole event because the container "contained" some wormholes
-an omnitool like borgs have but holdable and usable by humans
-contains artifact organs and artifact limbs to jam into yourself and others

Another container artifact.

Really though, making it an artifact piñata isn't a bad idea. One artifact begets many.

How about a chance to break nearby lights and spawn one of these boys?

As for other critters that could pop up, I know I said there shouldn't be much overlap with things that can appear in crates, but the idea of a Space Bear inside one's opened container artifact is, I feel, too amusing to ignore.

I like this idea. What true artifact nerd would be unhappy to get even more artifacts?

-Fluid, lots of fluid, just loose chems on the floor. 10,000 units.
oil, blood, water, mostly harmless but type-themed messes for different flavors of artefact.

-pocket-sized deep fryer.

-a canister of unknown gas

On the rare off-chance you picked up some alien dumpster, a gravitational singularity.

or, you know, an uncontrollable torrent of fire
