Gerald Lopez's head of security application.
#1
Usual character name: Gerald Lopez
BYOND username: Longestarmlonglaw
Discord username (if you are on our discord): Pickleplants11

Recommended by (if applicable):  Nobody.
Goon servers you play:  Goon 3 and 4. I rarely visit 1 sometimes because it's dead. but if it has enough pop, i'll go there

Reason for application:
I feel like im pretty good at playing regular security, and i feel ready for more responsibilities with the HOS job. I also feel smart enough to be able to lead security and generally guide and assist officers.
Security experience (300 word minimum):
Playing as security is guiding the round to be more fun for all. You act as a counterbalance to an arcfiend destroying genetics because they called them mean words or a traitor mechanic handing out guns to the entire crew "because funny". You exist as a form of opposition, an obstacle, a challenge to any ner'do'wells.
I've been playing goon on and off since 2021 and security is one of the jobs i like playing the most. I enjoyed playing sec the most because of the culture in general surrounding the server and security itself. Funny antagonist gimmicks are encouraged while murderous rampages are discouraged.
I like doing what i can to teach newer seccies, but it's important to keep in mind quite a moderate chunk of this game can't be "taught" . You just have to figure it out yourself. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. But do what you can to ensure it's never afraid to ask... even if they decide they want to do the method of "beat my head against the wall until i get it". (Which is a very.... interesting way to learn the game. I did it myself when i first started playing, go in blind and figure everything out for myself)
While i am very experienced with security, it's important to know that im NOT omniscient. There's quite a few things that i am working on, namely, security on rp.
On goon 3 and 4, it's generally more difficult to make decisions that are good for the round (Fucking up IC and having an antag escape custody because they were caught 10 minutes into the shift to give them a 2nd chance) because you also have to justify it in an RP sense. Im GREAT at taking actions that guide the round in a healthy way.... but not very good at trying to justify and make sense of it in an RP sense. I've been working on it. It's an art of trying to do what you want in a way that makes sense IC wise while also being good for the round.
On the roleplay servers you have to both think as a player and a character, the character knows that they should immediately get rid of all guns the crew has, and all contraband and stuff and whatnot, and be done with i.t. But as a player, I know doing that would be very unfun, so I have to incorporate some level of incompetence so it's more enjoyable. I, in general favour "player" decisions more over character decisions because it's more fun for everyone. I try to satisfy both states, and i feel like im improving on both making good decisions that are healthy for the round and making sure it makes sense IC.

Answer two or more of the following:
  • What advice would you give to other sec players?
This is all just a game, win or lose. It does not matter unless you and everyone else had fun. Don't get too upset if you get neurostung and absorbed or buckshott'ed. Goon has no "ranking" system. You wont get penalized for dying/losing/fucking up and an antag escapes. Infact, in some cases, losing might be fun. Especially during a very slow shift where it's just 1 spief in the whole shift vs 5 seccies, a Det, hos, and NTSC. A random seccie choosing to "fumble" and drop their gun might give the spief the confidence to push the round forward and start antagging. You want to be strong enough to counteract and present yourself as an opposition to the antags, but not so strong they dont bother doing anything out of fear of getting caught, have gaps. Forget a thing or two. Run away from fights even if you know you might win. While a HOS is not supposed to intentionally die, practicing restraint like running away from a fight you know you're going to win, but choose to run because you want the spief to have a "lucky escape" and continue pushing the round forward when the shift is already slow and boring, is a good thing to know. This does require some intuition and knowledge of how a shift is going. It's not really a skill that can be "taught" to a secass, you kinda just play security and develop gamesense overtime.

  • What was one of your favorite security moments? (Either playing as a sec officer or interacting with one)
I was playing CE,  and i caught a vampire draining a random assistant, i ran, and announced over comms "I KNOW THIS GUY HAS A SECRET, BUT IM GONNA KEEP IT, AND NOT SNITCH" Which resulted in me getting taken to the interrogation room by security, where i gave them bogus information and vague and cryptic hints.  Security was... quite cooperative and managed to decipher my cryptic statements into pinpointing the vampire's identity... after like 20 minutes, by then the vampire amassed enough thralls and kicked all of security's shit in. But i was spared by the vampire and allowed to go free onto the shuttle

  • What game improvements or changes do you think would benefit security players?
The brig timers are very finnicky and annoying to operate, can we just change it so that it is a "input numbers" instead of dragging a knob?
Answer one or more of the following fun questions (because it's important for the HoS to be fun):
[*]What's a security gimmick that you've ran or wanted to run?
Executionless security, I remember back on tg this HOS named Kayla Paulson did "executionless security" and it was pretty impressive. I don't really have any plans or ideas on how to RUN the gimmick though nor do i really want to. It's just one of those "shitty awful ideas from my ADHD impulse brain that should have stayed in my thoughts" Kinda just a dumb "Hey what if"

[*]Previous bans (while this will not affect your application lying about it will): I remember i got banned a year or so ago (i think) because i Ree'ed too much.

Also btw here's my previous HOS app for reference if you want: https://forum.ss13.co/showthread.phptid=22209&pid=200827#pid200827
Look how far i have improved a year from now.
