I actually fully agree with that, seeing how many times i finished teaching secasses the ropes just to finish on "and that's that for basic forensics, but you should really ask the detective on a deep dive with how extensive the details can get." With how elaborate deduction and crime solving can be if the chance presents itself, it would be nice to have a dedicated kit to get new players familiar with the role.
On a side note, the detective *does* have a locker full of spare equipment that could be given to a junior detective/partner at the very moment. So while a new loadout would be nice, i think the same could be achieved with the gear that is available at the moment. Just with a few extra steps.
As others said the available detective work can be incredibly limited depending on the round, so i think it would be ideal if two detectives/detective and assistant/ two monkeys in a trench coat/whatever would focus on the same crime rather than split up and fight over scraps
wait, i think i got lost on the wrong thread, the mention of detective blew a smoke screen in my face.
Re radio operator: i don't think security needs extra roles or gear for radio communication. A secass or an officer sitting at the desk and focusing on the radio and updating records works plenty. But more than that, i think good radio communication is a core skill of being a good officer so i rather people would nurish that skill rather than have a reason to ignore the radio more

I'm all for adding new roles that have a lot of paths/avenues to potentially explore or expand upon specific gimmick areas we don't usually cover. Hall monitor was a good example of the latter in that they fundamentally represent a heretofore ungoverned area of space aboard: the halls, yet also have a lot of "impotent power" avenues to explore that a security assistant doesn't get (by virtue of actually, you know, being security) Detective being separate from security will I argue always be a good example of the former: private dick tracey, security support, inspector gadget: it's a role with a lot of diversity of play given by its unique behaviour.
This isn't a bad idea at all, but it's also highly specific: It's got one job to do and the expectation is that it'll be doing it every round. That's not bad, but I also think that anything we add that does that need to also show it's not already being done, which I feel this thread and personal experiences demonstrate strongly this just isn't true: HoS delegating, assistants, and something nobody has mentioned yet but does sometimes happen is the AI helping coordinate too. Personally I tend to lean off helping too much as AI if there's a full team on (unless ordered) but sometimes when it's just a couple of people then yeah, and I feel that helps underline my final point: It's going to vary when/if this is necessary and I think that dynamism is actually good for round variety. Let it happen naturally by security delegation/people picking what they wanna do.
I had a long diatribe at this point about the catch-22 of Security players both being criticised for not being perfect at their job yet we often speak positively of HoS applicants who "create" these leniences and chances, thus damning people playing the role either way. It was pretty good I promise and you'd definitely have agreed with me, but it also diverged far from the original proposal so I've reduced it down to: It's okay if not every round security is at their finest. Just like it is when engineering/science/botany/pick your department any department blows up the station. That's part of the game, we all see the disclaimer.
