Today me and my fellow engineers worked to make a hotspot trap to try and maximize power. The result of course was the death of half the engineering team. 
I think it's safe to say that the geothermal engine is the one that sees less tinkering overall. The creation of hotspot traps is generally not well known (as far as I can see) and the benefits of making one aren't that great considering the time spent/danger of permastun.
While I'm no coder, I'd like to propose a couple of ideas I got that could make geothermal setups a bit easier to accomplish (hopefully our coders will glance at this post and get inspiration)
1. A way to move hotspots around by more than one tile at once. Currently stompers and the funny boots that let you crush people can only push a hotspot by one tile making the push towards the trap harder.
2. Adding a specialized stomper that moves hotspots only in one direction instead of just moving them away from itself. This would make hotspot stacking easier and maybe less shaky screens.
3. Give engineering some suits that stop them from being permastunned by the trap or that give them proper resistance against the damage it deals.
