HoS Application (Gerald Bostock)

Usual character name: Gerald Bossstock

BYOND username: BotchKing
Discord username (if you are on our discord): Gerald Bossstock/Brick

Recommended by (if applicable): None

Goon servers you play: Sylvester

Reason for application:
With the influx of new players recently, I think having someone in clear position of authority among security makes rounds more fun. Without a HoS, it's always a gamble whether violent, new or just plain bad secoffs will be more numerous than the more experienced or laid-back officers. It then can be hard for them to hold back the more bloodthirsty players while being equal in CoC.

After lots of sec shifts and learning experiences, I think I've reached a point where I would be competent enough to be a decent HoS.

...And to be brutally honest, I also want to prove to myself that I CAN do it.

Security experience (300 word minimum):
I've started playing in July last year, around the Tomato tide. I played mostly on Nightshade, where I started learning each roles one by one and basically tried security last. I remember somewhat disliking the experience at first, mostly because of the attitude of players in sec. Most of them would immediately rush to try and kill antagonists before they had a chance to do anything, which I thought was just unfun for everyone.

I burned out from the game for a couple of months after Nightshade closed but I came back on the RP server somewhere around November-December. This time, I tried sec again and was surprised how people here were open to just talk to antagonists instead of instantly spacing them. Interacting with people and participating in driving the rounds became the best part of the game for me and I basically started maining sec from there.

I still made mistakes and done stuff I regret now. I know I was a bit "jumpy" during my early career. I tended to arrest for minor crimes and get overly worked up about insults or threats, but I don't consider I've ever been excessively violent.

Since then, I think I've improved a lot in how I deal with people, mostly because I learned to detach myself from how I feel about crimes and criminals and it helped me become more level-headed and objective in my judgement. I learned about tools like chat-highlights to keep active on comms.
Nowadays, I can keep my cool during hectic situations, even though I know I can struggle with comms when I get too involved in the action.
I'm still working on that.

Recently, I've had the chance to teach a few security assistants and the best part about it was showing them how a good team can make Security one of the most fun department in the game. You never feel like you're doing "your own thing" since your whole goal is to interact with others. It's been good to also show that a good officer doesn't always have to rely on their gun, and negotiating with criminals can be much more effective than endlessly frustrating them.

I like keeping in touch on discord with other officers or antagonists to know more about what they thought sec did well or not, and I do my best to adjust myself from there.
I'm still learning every shift, but I think becoming HoS would provide me with even more room to improve as a player.

Answer two or more of the following:
  • What advice would you give to other sec players?
    - Learn about your tools
The people I see joining sec for the first time usually don't know much about the different tools they have access to, and that's ok!
I advise them to first look at their gear and learn what does what and how to use their tools before jumping in the action. Of course the wiki will help, but asking your fellow officers will be the best source of information. Never be afraid to ask, so many things are convoluted in this game you probably have no chance to learn everything without external information.

   - Pair up
When I see someone new, I like inviting them to patrol with me. I personally think it's one of the best way to learn the standard procedures for sec, especially on RP.
On RP, sec culture is radically different from other servers and it takes time to get used to it.
So much of the job relies on how you interact with people, it's important to do it in a professional and respectful way, and to know when to be lenient or put more pressure. Pairing up can also lead to engaging dynamics, and can be fun to do even as senior officers. If no one is open to pair up, theres always the next best thing...

  -Observe
It's not always possible to follow your team mates and some things you simply can't see from an outside perspective. A great way to learn how interact better with people is to simply observe a round from an experienced officer or, even better, the HoS's point of view. I can't count how many times I've done this (I still do, regularly), just to see how different experienced players would deal with, emergency calls, interrogations or tough decisions. It's a great way to test yourself, to ask "What would I do in that situation?" "Why did they do or say that?"
  • What game improvements or changes do you think would benefit security players?
I know other players have said this, but I would really like a way to "close" the armory once it's been open. I really don't like seeing random people like the HoP gear up on lethals for absolutely no reason.

I would also love to see the detective's position being reworked. Right now the role feels extremely unreliable, since many players choose it only for the gun. Even if the detective is a good player, having them being among the antag roles makes it very hard to rely on them for anything, and most of the time sec officers will just do a better job at investigating than the detective, who is then just useless.
Having the role being antag-disabled would be great on the RP servers.

Finally, this is more of a personnal issue, but I would like to be able to fine people as a sec officer without having to check with command OR have fines being more meaningful. There are crimes that deserve more than a ticket but not quite an arrest, and I'd love to have more options as light punishments in these cases. (yes, I know about swirlies, I just don't do them).

  • Describe any differences in your playstyle when part of a full security team and when being the only security officer.
  • When I'm alone, I stay very aware that I can't handle more than one case at a time, so I will try to be as efficient as possible with each one. There's not much point in bringing someone in interrogation for a potential criminal when actual crimes could be happening outside with no one available to help. Therefore I will try to handle cases quickly to remain available for emergencies. With a full team, I like when officiers are assigned to "cases". This way, officers can concentrate about their case and let the available officers handle calls. When dealing with criminals, you can then let officers assigned to their case to deal with them, and focus on something else.In general, I find that being more "case-focused" like this can prevent security from spreading too thin on too many things at once (as long as a certain balance is found).

Answer one or more of the following fun questions (because it's important for the HoS to be fun):
  • Write a poem to convey your thoughts on security/NanoTrasen/space/bees/anything related to SS13.
I DIDNT WRITE THIS. It's a poem that I really like from Ian Anderson's TAAB2, which inspired my character's name.
I included it because I find it weirdly relevant to the themes of different lives/different people/different careers that are possible in SS13. After all, each round is molded not only by your role, choices and actions, but by everyone else's as well.
...Maybe it's too serious but I don't care here it is anyways.

We all must wonder, now and then, if things had turned out - well - just plain different

Chance path taken, page unturned or brief encounter, blossomed, splintered

Might you have been the man of courage, brave upon life's battlefield
Captain Commerce, high-flown banker, hedonistic, down-at-heel?
A Puritan of moral fibre, voice raised in praise magnificent?
Or rested in assured repose, knowing your lot in quiet content?

What-ifs, Maybes and Might-have-beens fly
Soft petals on a breeze
What-ifs, Maybes and Might-have-beens
Why-nots, Perhaps and Wait-and-sees
  • What's a security gimmick that you've ran or wanted to run?
It might not be very original, but I would really like a round where everyone as sec chose an alternate uniform, like owls, mime or abomination costumes.
Also I would love to dress StirStir in all HoS gear
  • Draw a picture!
I doodled a clown with a sec helmet, because its my favorite combo. Look at the Authoritarian Clown.

Gerald is a lot of fun to be around both in character and out of character. They know what they're doing, and know when to let it go. They also have a very valuable skill as security; communication. Let's make those boots stompy, and that armor vest a cape. +1

I have played quite a few rounds with Gerald on the same team and i can say with confidence that you are a solid Security Officer, the team can rely on you consistently and you also like to communicate, sometimes i have asked you to help me handle arrests among other things and no doubts about your capability have crossed my mind.

Also there is no shame on being a HoS to test your limits even further, because we know you do not seek the beret for mere vanity, but to help the Security Department soar higher and higher, and I'm proud of being part of the team.

A solid and fashionable +1

Yes, Gerald is a name I recognize and I am always glad to see them playing security. +1

Gerald is always a pleasure to have on the team!  Never seen them loose their cool, always fair brig times and treatment of everyone.  They are overall a great secoff and they excel at staying on comms, which is very important!
#6
+1 from me, Fortunate to have been playing with him with Jacoby and Smells (accident!) lately and we have a similar approach to security which I can always respect.

Application was too long, forgot to list me as a recommendation, and misspelled his own name in the title. -∞

Gerald's a really solid SecOff, communicates well, has great presence on the station, and conducts himself in a calm and cool manner. No doubt he'll wear the beret well!

He is always someone I am happy seeing on a sec team whether I am an antag or not

Indifferent, since I've had a lot of interactions with you in the past as a normal Sec Off and you're good and the only thing here that could use work is more communications awareness (both Sec Comm and PDA).

Yesterday I had a round with you as Cap with two chronic harm lubers that did a number on the station (AND the crew). I offered to one of them to turn themselves in or I would arrest them to do a search + brig. Then I was told they turned themselves in. I then SPECIFICALLY asked and communicated to please hold them until I got down to HQ from north Sec so I could search them + remove any spare access from their ID since I attempted to arrest them previously. When I arrived you, the Captain, had already released them. When I asked about it you, the Captain, said that they were searched but you didn't check the ID (in the 15 seconds it took me to run there? Maybe you meant some earlier arrest of this same person). When I asked why you didn't listen to what I requested, you said it was "not your problem".

But, you're Captain on a no-HoS/NTSO round and choosing to play SecCap, and people kept getting injured for the rest of the round from more space lube, so, it kind of is. I ended up taking the ID off the same person later and escorting them to HoP to see what access they had and get it removed and they had additional Science and Janitorial Access and were lubing the shuttle at the end.

If that's how you play in a leadership role, dismissive to your Security team and flagarantly disregarding communications, then I really don't want to see it again.

Hello, I just want to clarify, during that round I wasn't too involved with sec. I had a lot to deal with, notably replacing the AI. When I came in sec, it was to bring the old, unresponsive AI. When I arrived, the clown luber in the brig was on the end of their timer and the chute opened as I came in. When I got out, you immediately told me you wanted to catch them again, and why I did not search them. I was confused, since someone who is in the brig under timer usually has been searched already. I told you it was not my job to search them, because I was not involved at all in catching or processing them.
When you said you wanted to catch them again, I was under the impression you were not aware they already served their time, which is why I probably sounded dismissive of their case.
I normally would not respond to this, but I feel this particular situation was caused by miscommunication. Sorry about that...

I think that gets to the core of it. My question boils down more to "why did no one find it important enough to update me on this when I asked about it specifically?" when you were taking on a leadership spot.

You're a solid secoff; this was the first time I think I ever interacted with you in a leadership position and it didn't sit well with me, specifically in toneand actions. It was a huge "wait, what?" because Gerald the Officer didn't seem to line up with Gerald the Captain in that moment. This is the only perspective I have about how you'll not only play Sec but how you'll play as a Sec Leader. I think, like Panga said, it's totally fine to want to go for HoS to push your limits. Just be thoughtful going forward that those limits aren't just about tools and combat and nailing RP, they can be towards the managerial side of things too. No sweat off anyone's back going forward, though. All I ask for is growth. I don't have much time for the rest of this cycle to play/spectate, but this is the kind of change that if you rolled in as HoS to demonstrate this, that'd be just fine.

I've had a lot of fun as an Officer alongside you. I do wish you all the best on this application.
