It's kinda weird that dowsing rods do, but the thing you need to dig the actual geothermal hole doesn't.

They should fit in mining belts, try one of those instead!

Engineers' stuff spawns with the utility belt, not the mining belt, though, and they're the ones that need the shovel.

Maybe make the shovel collapsible, having a short timer you need to use to re-extend and collapse it. Would work similar to labcoat unbuttoning.
