Rockworms will attempt to eat, but not actually ever eat materials - they will just lunge at it and do nothing. This means rockworm farming cannot be carried out.

If they eat enough rocks, they can then be killed for more valuable ores.

Really, critter AI in general is full of awfully broken outdated junk and could do with some improvement, which I was looking at for the intrusion antag/gamemode before I put it aside to focus on smaller features I'll ever complete.
