Dr. Puggers for HoS - Third time's the charm

Goon servers you play: RP, mostly higher pop, sometimes lowpop

Reason for application:

As this server continues to bring new people in which in turn brings a lot of new faces to security, I believe that I am qualified to fill the
often vacant role of the HoS, to better steer security response, coordination and treatment of both antags and the crew. Very often I've seen security falling into disarray
and letting emotions take the better of them, leading to extremely rash decisions which sometimes are downright dystopian. I believe that a HoS being present will allow for a
very Roleplay friendly way of teaching new officers that what they are doing is wrong. Especially since following chain of command with absent captains leads to multiple people going
for multiple different resolutions. I believe in taking charge, trying to direct actions and responses - however, security is still often staffed with veteran players which creates
a sort of a power vacuum. Nothing malicious of course, I just believe that a beret would solve most problems that plague security during stressfull rounds.

Security experience (300 word minimum):

I have played for over a year. Most of that in security. I believe that I am well capable of handling the numerous situations that occur
while playing this role. I believe that I have a good balance of keeping the shift running, not curbstomping the antags all the while 'not throwing the round'.
To me, security is a fine line between leaving antags some breathing room to do their thing while still doing your job and 'punishing' their mistakes and crimes commited. Besides,
the most fun antags are the ones you play cat and mouse with- the ones that fit the 'so close, yet so far away'.
I have trained numerous security assistants in my time, most of them under a similar 'script'. A script that puts communication and compassion as a priority. Antags are just like every
other crewmate: A person who's here to have fun.

Since this is my third application, all the negatives that were given to my conduct have been taken into account, I've even taken the liberty of asking around to 'take inventory' of my
shortcomings as a security officer and pretty much any other role. I've made sure it's not interpeted as a sway of opinion, but merely a survey to better my appearances and behavior. I do believe there is always room for improvement, since I know that being a HoS would bring new issues and difficulties to the table, ones that I do believe I am ready to take upon.
While yes, last time I applied, the main downfall was the fact that I do enjoy more hectic rounds which brings into question how I would handle quieter round. It was a situation that was outside of my control, joining and playing security during 100 players pop, where even extended rounds would warrant a shuttle call.
Veteran players who are just extremely good at antagging, having a standoff with the only outcome being my certain
doom with no way of calling for backup. Those moments stick with you and you do fell some tiredness while on a lowerpop extended round. It is something I've been working on bettering and I believe
that it's a shortcoming I have conquered.

Unfortunately, as much as we try to keep the person playing the character seprate from the character in question, we still harbour opinions on different players.
I am no stranger to this, but I do believe my actions in game and in character do not reflect any opinions I have of people and their playstyles I might not appreciate.
Should it cross lines, I know about ahelping it, which I do.
I will say, however that might make me sound, I am very objective when it comes to security matters and I will not favor anyone based on their playstyle, only their current round IC behavior.
And to immediately contradict myself, I did try to sway more robust players during my Captain Antag shift a few days ago, but security was well staffed and I did need a bit of an upper hand. But I believe that's as far as my metagaming goes.

Sometimes, it's easy to tell at a glance that someone's an antag, especially if they're known to be robust. I will often refuse to take that into account and still play along my way into being isolated with them. I will do my best not to die and try to call for backup and fight my way out, but only once they've commited an antagonistic action.

While being rejected twice, although unfortunate, it does not frustrate me. In fact, it only reinforces the fact that his position comes with trust and respect, and I would be honoured to be a part of it.

What advice would you give to other sec players?

Typically, a good secrity officer is one that is active on comms and in turn, does not harm batton and arrest the clown for making an announcement.
SS13, especially goon3 and 4 are RP servers, ones that take conversations and storybuilding as a priority over full on speechless combat.
For such reasons, talking to the crew and being mindful of possible trickery does nothing other than bettering the story and moving the shift into a satisfying end.
I will never stop stressing mentioning the importance of this. Communication. Having a general idea of what everyone is doing, what the suspects are and for which crimes they might be tied to.
Not just communication with security, but the crew as well. Being a trusted security officer and a friendly face will take you places. Talking to crew and building relationships with players will
only serve you well. If you're known to be as someone who sees themself above the rest of the crew, you will be met with scrutiny from even the loyal crew. Treat other how you would want to be treated,
even the antags. Unless they kill, then it's fair game.

What was one of your favorite security moments? (Either playing as a sec officer or interacting with one)

Deciding to do a fun search and rescue, to see how the newly trained secasses would react to an officer sending an alert and not responding. To see who would go for the disk,
will they think of the pinpointer; Look at my last known location and speak to the crew about what might've happened. I hid in a locker and waited... Until the detective dragged a capud victim
and drained their DNA right in my filed of vision. It was a very unfortunate thing and I debated with myself whether to ignore it or not.
Other than that, it would be a scientist dragging an emote forcer artifact and making the detective wink, which in turn outed him as a triator with a derringer popping out.

What game improvements or changes do you think would benefit security players?

A SpaceLaw book, that does not tell you how to brig people but rather give directions to appropriate punishments should a HoS or someone with more experience be present.
I've seen players brigging for far too long, sometimes even forgetting people in the brig.
Little to no handholding when it comes to the game preparing you for what's in store does allow for more relationship building but, it does harm when there's less security, especially if they're
not as experienced.

Describe any differences in your playstyle when part of a full security team and when being the only security officer.

I do regret enjoying higherpop since, in such rounds I often run off mid sentence because a fight has erupted, a gunshot was heard or a body reported.
My playstyle is binary, either I'm talkative and frequently visit the crew for a chat, even if it's just 'how's your shift been'; 'had any trouble'; and so on.
On the other hand, it's intense running and falling through hallways because I'm darting between an active shooting and a kidnapping.
All in all, if it's calm and antags are talkative and interesting, I tend to be quite leniant and diplomatic. If it's a hectic round, I don't believe in leaving the team to handle everything while I interrogate a case that's already been closed and all the facts known.

What's a security gimmick that you've ran or wanted to run?

Just today, I saw a screenshot on classic and plan on stealing it for myself.
Mechcomping traffic lights on intersections and enforcing them.

Previous bans (while this will not affect your application lying about it will):

I have been banned once. Self antagged by stealing a clown car and harassing security. Short ban, lesson learned, I just couldn't resist it.
This happened quite early on.
Other than bans, I was warned twice.
Onc time I mispelled a word in a very unfortunate way, I beleive admin saw that I had already said the word correctly twice and they saw it was an accident.
Other than that, it would be warnings of escalation when I first started playing, simply being overwhlemed by antagging for the first couple of times and sending a monkey barrel without prior RP.

Heya Dr. Puggers, before going into any kind of review, I do want to get some clarification on these particular quotes. Could you go into a little more detail? You acknowledge yourself here a contradiction in your application that's apparently very recent.

I don't have the context of the round and might be misinterpreting what you mean here, and it would be an injustice to your application to not try and avoid that. However, on the face of it it appears you're admitting your commitment to eschew favouring or metagaming, however light, is not consistent. These two aspects are pretty crucial for a HoS or a player in general to avoid, and that your statements against that aren't firm one if you need to have "an upper hand" which going to be a regular factor both in HoS and in general security play. I feel like a little more explanation around what exactly you mean might help avoid that and give better clarity about your approach both as an officer and potential HoS.

Bear in mind this is just my personal current interpretation and others may full well not come to the same one, and it's absolutely fine if you don't for my sake, just explaining something I had some concern on while going through your application this time around.

By "however that might make me sound" I mean, to me this statement feels as if I'm tooting my own horn and I don't want anyone to think that I believe that I'm better than others who may not be objective and show favouritism,

Perhaps 'contradict' is too harsh because the mentioned round only happened once.

I rolled a Traitor Captain the other day. I was given an uplink which I didn't use until the very end and went on to spread rumors and gain a following. My targets were players that are more frequent and more knowledgable to the game because I wanted a strong start and not drag out the buildup. That saying, that would be as far as my metagaming goes, such as targetting certain players whose playstyles I know and the ones that I know what to expect of.
It was because I hadn't bought any mindhacks or such items, saving the tatorcoins for a syndicate tophat for the grand reveal.
I wanted to start of with players who are more open minded to things involving RP. Ones that won't scream meta stuff over comms and ruin the round.
In conclusion, I mentioned it because it was a relatively recent event and I want full transparency. and a captain antag is rather rare and I wanted to involve as many people and hopefully bring some excitement into the round

I can see how my wording can go against me in the quite opposite direction that it was meant for...

Alright, that helped clear things up quite a bit and I appreciate it a lot. I think it is an important distinction as well that you are being upfront about it and it being a singular event, but I feel the context you've given helps give a bit more insight that'll hopefully help. Good luck in the application! I'll do my best to be back with some proper feedback and hopefully others will too!
