Admin name: A general IRC thing
Synopsis: So given that I'm on a temp ban, and given that it's me I wasn't sure if I would post about this or not and feel free to lock it if you feel it's unwarranted but I have a half complaint or just really questioning a policy. I want to be clear that I'm not really pointing fingers and I don't think anyone is "bad" per say, but there is something I wanted to address.
It's been brought up more than once that the rules of the IRC and how people act doesn't really line up with the rules enforced in game, at least not in practice.
It's been complained that rape jokes were told, rape discussions held, and yiff porn and such has been discussed and posted even by admins in IRC. This has come up in ban appeals, and I think it is a salient point.
It's my opinion that a person can reasonably base their expectations of rule enforcement based on the kind of tolerance level and actions of the admins in the official chat of the game. It seems to, and I am probably going to be vastly overruled on this, but if ss13 has official IRC, it should hold the exact same standards as the game if for no other reason than to reasonably represent the environment the game tries to cultivate.
It also seems that when you tell people you don't want the kind of people that would do creepy shit in the game to be playing, or the type of person that would tell rape jokes in there, there is a certain amount of credibility lost to that claim when the administration holds people who in the official chat for the game do the same thing in the IRC or variations. No judgement on the base value of these things or the people dispensing them, just a point that the rules should remain somewhat equal.
Lastly, I get that the chat is a bit more freeform, but like the recent skunkrocker complaint... I feel that would have been shut down in the game and at a certain point you come to recognize topics that will not generally pour out good responses. There's a place for these I think, but sadly a place where people can see the administration carrying out the kind of conversations that would get deadchat muted in the game isn't really it.
Full disclosure, I have not spent any time in the IRC lately. This just seems to be a common thing of "this admin does this all the time in the IRC" and it's often justified rather than acknowledged that yeah, that would get em banned in the game. To keep the kind of community the game claims to want to have I think it's wrong of more to be tolerated in IRC than would be in game.
I guess my complaint is a general administration complaint about how that's handled and something I'd like to see be updated and addressed.
