Should you be able to respawn as security?
#1
Recent respawn PR makes me think if security role respawn should be restricted. An example, during an hour when the pop is usually low, there is no sec except antagonist detective and a dead captain. A lot of people then died and one decided to spawn as security to make the round more even for the crew, rather one sided fight with two active antagonist. I pick an anecdote just to make this a bit more clear about "respawning as security". I do not have a strong opinion about whether or not you should be able to spawn as cap, sec, and command. I have two sides to make.

Against respawning as security or command :
  1. It feels like using the information from your previous character to "balance" the game
  2. Security (and some command members) have tools to turn the balance around the round. (Ie. Stun, access to lawrack, ID change, etc)
  3. In my opinion, security is just less enjoyable or feels "less rp like" when you get spoiled on who is antag by accident. It doesn't feel the same when you pretend not knowing the guy who is a changeling when you accidentally click observe someone, let alone respawning after your previous character have seen who are doing what and where.
For allowing respawning as security and command :
  1. People can roleplay around the mystery still without acting based on what they know. If specific role is off limit, what makes it that different if you respawn as a crew still and still have to fend yourself against antagonist.
  2. Security being wiped changed the tide around and crew tend to be not weaponized enough for it, or not having command means less access to certain stuff that can be helpful. It is better to still have momentum during time like this.
  3. You can still examine who is antags through ghost chatters when you are dead and waiting to be cloned and you are still not allowed to act around it, so it doesn't make a difference either if you respawn as secoff or watch who is antag you haven't seen before getging cloned.
  4. The hope for someone to latejoin as captain or sec is not that high when you see 0 security.

Honestly, I am not sure either if I make good points for either side. I do feel like being able to respawn as security kinda change how the round works around random expectation. But I am not sure if it is good for certain pop if people are killing crew and security left and right, without guy with a gun to the rescue.

It's simple. Yes. Even if you know the antag. Since it gives the antags a reason to fight you or deal with you.

And if you go: "but I know so it ain't fun"

Well if you a security/command/staff who sees a wizard walking around and decide: "Let's beat em up."
You are doing it wrong. In classic? Sure it is mostly fine.

But in RP? You don't go straight after the antag, you just do your job.
Heck one shift I was a chaplain... an engineer entered my chapel dragging another one in and being weird.. then for some reason.. he started to choke and kill his fellow engineer right infront of me (and obiviously revealed he was a changeling). I still got killed by one in the end who didn't reveal it to me obiviously. But yea...

So if you know who is an antag and who's not even when respawning. That's your own deal-o. If you can't do it since it's spoiled, then don't....

But don't restrict it. If someone abuses it. Admins will bonk em.

I feel security is one of the most important roles in RP and knowing when to go easy when to go hard and when to take the loss or steal the win are the most important factors behind playing security. It might sound odd coming from me as I might be the most unrobust player on the server relying on cheap tricks hit and runs and over powered cheese but despite this I have had my rounds ended pretty darn quick by facing off against one or more security officers.

Security provide a much needed sense of both order and conflict being a wall you can push off for RP. As such I think being able to respawn as security is crucial I trust 90% of the player base who choose to respawn as sec will bring the right amount of resistance and support to keep the round and RP going and interesting knowing what they will be up against.

With the new observer PR in place i think its more important than ever to have as many options open for people to participate in the round, taking more away especially right now would further add to the negatives this current PR brings if we feel security is gaining too much from the way things are currently it could be considered but from my personal perspective its gone the other way and there aren't enough security especially during low pop to handle any kind of loud antaggery.
