let the spatial interdictors' locks be lifted
#1
keeping it short - let the CE / engi staff have the ability to lift a spatial interdictor's access restriction. i don't like that the only way to do this right now is to steal ranch's or be a traitor..

I spent 30 seconds trying to work out why there's even a lock in the first place beyond "We expected people to use interdictors more" There might be a good reason I'm not that bright, but I can't think of one.

The initial suggestion was to give engineers the ability to remove it, not to remove it by default and giving any staffie the ability to free-range grief by turning off all interdictors.

Engineer locking is fine. Makes sense.

i prefer engis still get to keep the interdictor locked, just give them the ability to unlock/lock by tapping their ID against it. traitors could just waltz in, nab the active interdictors and toss them into disposals if engis had to ask the HoP to lock their interdictors (which honestly sounds like a lot)

Traitors can already waltz in and throw the contents of other departments into disposals, I don't see what makes engineering so special that requires them to have unbreakable toys.

plus if the interdictor is removed a new one can be put into place

The fact they need to put these into public. If you want them to be destructable by antags, the mechanical fault mechanic or anything else to sabotage these would be better suited. I want to prevent non-antags, non-engineers to touch them. That's already a massive problem with smoke or door shields

Oh, right. That's why they have a lock. I genuinely did not make the connection out of a positive view of stationkind.

Yeah better go with a toggle lock or as Earthfire says, going down giving them destructible mechanics like other mechanisms. They're not a one-print manufacturing job either so it's not like someone stealing your screwdriver. A toggle lock matches our general pattern with other mechanisms too and that seems to work well enough for allowing potential shenanigans. If you wanted some kind of middle ground, you could make them work like personal lockers, but then you've got this device only you can actually use and I'm sure someone would find something horrible to do with that, so you could instead do it to access levels but then that's a load of bloat to add to a little change.

I don't know man I just think interdictors are kinda neat. I'd like to see people fiddling with them more, or at the very least seeing a spatial tear get what's coming to it.

using a valid ID on one should let you remove the access requirements. i think letting them be reprogrammed with accesslite/pro as a way to let e.g. medical control the one by cloning, robotics control the one giving borgs charge, is a good idea. lets them be more "engineering gifts to department" rather than "engineering device in department"

and lets us see more general useage of them. I like it.
