Nanite frequency on newish-pr: needs toning down.
#1
This is a personal opinion at this point and others might disagree, but I'll put it out there and see what people think.

We've recently tuned mining encounters with some fun new stuff, and potential danger, nanites. It's a good way to get some extra iridium and most miners with experience know how to handy counter them. All good for me personally.

But I feel like they could use a little toning down, or some kind of basic threshold of when they can appear. Why? Because it seems to be a little too rough on newer miners and there's some regular spillover of nanites into mining-adjacent areas. This is a fairly big change from nanites before: that would usually be a cause of some station concern if a miner recklessly summoned and leaked nanites into the station proper.

They're also pretty tough and rough if not handled with the right tools, and also kind of hard to see. But I also respect others may feel different and the PR was approved in the first place so I don't want to suggest we just roll it back.

So alternatively: Just make them appear on the more valuable/rarer rocks, or just slightly tone down their frequency or spawn numbers. Just a hair less lethal, maybe let the miners get their industrial suits going for them.

Imo, it's fine-ish for now. You can use mining magnet to scan area with nanites. Just avoid it, you are fine. I don't find it often either, it's mostly just on a one or two asteroid out of many randomized asteroid.

Though, I do notice that there are not a lot of people that use the scan area function on magnets. But, imo, it sounds kinda "skill issue, use scan," for me.

Glowbold has already fixed up the visibility issue it should also be noted, so we can say that part has been resolved.

As for the scanner: it's a point, though I think "skill issue" is a rough thing to throw at a role that tends to be one of the early ones people try. Perhaps a compromise is updating the mineralogy 101 book to have a segment mentioning it. I'll put my money where my mouth is and put something in the miner page for the wiki as well.

I do kinda agree that scan mechanic is kinda hidden. Most of the knowledge about it just a miner passing it into new player and rarely I have seen them advising people to do so nowadays

On that note, the guide to mining and miner wiki pages have the symbol for nanites and the scanner's utility highlighted a bit better. It's something at least.

In my opinion? Give the mining magnet a containment field that can be turned on and off. When the containment field is on.. nothing goes in or out.
When off... it's as it always is. You cannot spawn a new chunk when the containment field is on.

This way if you get nanites, you can turn on the containment field... there is just one lil aspect.. the containment field might hold explosions and nanites and debris... but it increases the magnet taking damage.
So while you avoid COLLETRAL, you zone it to the magnet. Also natural if nanites run a muck and overrun the miners, they get killed but now it's a matter of time before the nanites break free. So call security and have a good ole brawl in the magnet.
