Essentially, give certain items a serial number that can be read on close inspection (holding or standing near item)
Round start items get a serial number that tells you the department and room it spawned in. Multiple items simply get pushed up a number designation.
Any item made from a manufacturer gets a serial number that corresponds to the machine it was printed from, as well as a time stamp on when it was printed.
Cargo have slightly more exotic serial numbers which will indicate it came from cargo, and would need matching to shipment manifests.
Why do this? To create more forensic evidence for investigation. Find a crowbar used as a weapon in a murder? Trace it back to the machine it was printed from or place it was picked up from to check that area for more forensic evidence to compare to your crime scene
