Edit: To make it weirder, opening doors will sometimes 'cure' an area of tiles.

Update byond? that's usually the recommended fix for lighting issues.

The reason it cures it is that some doors block light, and by opening the door you open up the tiles to a light update. This is a bug that happens in various forms because this new lighting engine isn't foolproof and does a lot of funky things, like creating ominous orbs of black in areas that get bombed out, despite complete darkness like that being otherwise impossible even in corridors with absolutely no light sources.
See how it's a gradient? It's not detecting how to light the tile properly or something. Since I don't code this is about as good a guess as I can give. I've seen it happen, too.
