High Decay Digestion no longer fully works

What is supposed to happen when these gene is activated is every time you fart you make an obnoxious gas cloud that obscures vision, stinks to high heaven and causes slight toxin damage. At the moment there is no cloud visible, and I'm unclear if the stinking/tox damage is working or not either.
