Think nuclear propulsion but generating electricity instead. Give the scientists in research an excuse to make TTVs other than for nefarious purposes. Also this was actually a thing looked at in the 70s!

Like setting off explosions to get more engine output? SURE!

This is honestly a fantastic idea. It's novel and unique, the only question is how to best facilitate communication between Engineering and Science to make this happen reliably.

I could envision using Pressure Crystals in this process somehow, maybe make the explosions happen outside of the engine, get a bunch of crystals and then plop those in the engine. That makes Science able to do things and deliver it, and maybe could have a smaller area inside of Engineering where Engineers could do small scale explosions that don't provide as much energy unless they get their hands on bigger chems (with or without Science).
