Hello! After a lot of talking on the discord I thought I would just ask if you guys have any advice for me in Security. I haven't played much but I know I haven't been AMAZING and so I would love any advice to keep myself ontrack to being the upmost superb redshirt mallcop the station needs. Think of this as a mini HoS application except theres no need to say anything good and im not asking for HoS because i am not ready yet.
I will say I have issues with impulse control (not as in chronic or medically, i can and have been working on it) so examples you might have seen of me doing bad stuff like that would help a lot for me to work on haha.
I have played (as security)
Giselle Blanchette (SecOff) (named after Giselle from aespa, give them a listen fun fact)
Sierra McKinley (Detective)
I have also played (outside of security)
Allison Cameron (very old, and deprecated)
Kimin Park
Bianca Fortuna
Thank you so much! I've really enjoyed these past 100 or so hours playing with you all. Here's to 10,000 more!

Heya lau! I'd like to share some of my advices that i think are... midly good i think at least in my mind!
1th. I think to start this off is communication, security on itself is just some mall cop with an stun stick and a taser, so its good to keep some comms going you dont need to report everything you see, i myself report silly things or say something to keep the comms active but overall just staying active on comms is already super helpful, telling your team your going to patrol or telling the team you're staying in the bar, that type of thing.
2th. This come from a place that it took me a bit long to get out off, and i'm glad i did is. You dont have to be the super robust sec off, sometimes sec looses to mr Mc syndicate with an space 12 and stims and that's fine.
3th. This one is a more uhm more of the same to the second but its a bit different but. You will make mistakes and that's perfectly okay sometimes sec will catch mr John doe here cause he's been criming way to much, but turns out he's actually was not an antag and instead was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Remember that at your core you're still an human, sec to my knowledge isnt an almighty all knowing department things like that will get confusing.
4th. This might the one of my advices i give a lot to secasses that its okay to take breaks especially if you play high pop sec, sometimes it gets chaotic and sec really feels like a chore to get through? Go to the bar have some drinks talk with people, do something but your job for a bit. I cant enforce this enough but its something i like saying.
5th and final one. Okay so this one comes from a place of silly and whimsy that is the chars that i play but, try and have fun while you're doing this be silly, dress a funny suit to scare the antag, try and make a set-up with the antags put 5 secoffs on an crate tell them to open it for an clever surprise, tell the clown to slip the antag in the middle of the hallway. Again this is a bit biased since i play characters that are silly but with a lot of seriousness that comes with sec-off an little bit of fun is also equally appreciated.
This is all for my advices, i'm not exactly an beacon of robustness and light but i hope these advices and the ones that will appear are nice. Happy sec-ing and have fun. ^-^

To add to what's been said:
- It's never a bad idea to flip between secoff and secass for really any reason. You wanna directly deal with the antags vs being a ticketing menace. Either way, it's important to keep in mind with the next point.
- Knowing how to properly escalate the situation as security is handy to make rounds more a more interesting narrative to the round. Give an antag a reason to be an antag.
- When dealing with an antag early on, it's okay 'play dumb' every once in a while if you feel an antag's bit could lead to something funny/fun assuming things haven't escalated too far.
- This is definitely something that I have learned over time: You don't always have to run to every call on radio if you know others will go there. Sometimes just a small check in a couple minutes later is all that is needed.
- My last piece of advice is a bit of a combination of all that has been said: Your role in security is to help progress the story of the round for the antags and those involved, but not every round needs to be high octane. Try to not have the mindset of win-lose when you play security [or as an antag either]. Remember, it is just a game where we are all here to have fun.
My last thought is that you reaching out like this for advice is great to see. Generally, the HoS apps are as much an application for the beret as it is for aspiring secoffs to receive constructive feedback. Hopefully, there will be enough advice here to pick up on and work with, though I do know it can be a lot to take in all at once. Just take it one or two steps at a time and remember that practice makes perfect.

I've only played two or three rounds alongside Giselle, so I will try to keep that in mind with this feedback:
In a recent round Giselle was engaging in multiple knife-tossing competitions with other crew members to the point of death, and was asked to stop by the Head of Security on shift several times. Giselle decided to ignore the HoS and kept doing it, even while crime and other incidents were going on. Giselle nearly died from blood loss twice, and was fired from security due to not listening to the HoS. I remember Giselle saying "Well the Captain outranks you".
- One core concept of the RP servers is "act like you want to keep your job, and that being fired would be a terrible outcome". No one working for Nanotrasen should have the attitude of "Whatever boss man, fire me if you want but knife is life". While the Captain outranks everyone on a shift, your department head is still someone that should be listened to, and ignoring their concerns or requests - or just going over their heads to the captain - should be avoided as much as possible if the requests have merit.
- Security has very unique gear that can easily turn the tide of a shift. I'm not saying you're not allowed to die, or to intentionally avoid situations that might be dangerous but you probably should avoid dying from playing tossy-knife in a dark maintenance tunnel in the middle of nowhere.

This is very true. I do remember kind of regretting this, and I wish I had decided to do this another time maybe after I had been fired. Sometimes my brain flicks onto "do whatever's funniest" and that was one of those times. This is another issue with me and being too spontaneous and finding it hard to control myself. All I can do is confirm the fact I haven't done that again. Thank you for the advice!!
