Why not make a PDA cart that acts as a GPS, whilst also saying the names of on-station location and giving a pinpointer. Maybe has a map too.

I reckon you should be able to see the number of votes at all times, with a "current winner" That way you wouldn't get the problem of people split into different maps.

I did a quick sprite thing, with a new recipe to see how it could look. If it actually seems like a feasable thing, I'll continue it. less messy of course, with angles +flashing panels etc.

Perhaps they could work as an addition to plasma research? Same mechanics with bombs but end result gives you thrust instead of a dangerous uncontrolled explosion.
