I am pretty sure animated objects don't get their special effects, the wraith needs to possess it and take manual control over the object to use any abilities it has. Eg: an animated revolver would just bash people, but a possessed revolver can shoot people. Try having the wraith actually possess the katana before trying to cut people's limbs off.
