The Island: A Post-Communist Simulation (forum game) - TheNewTeddy - 11-12-2016 Note that I've spoilered out a large chunk of the game's background/rules/etc so that you can just get to the meat and potatoes if you so choose. This is the thread where you sign up to play the game. BACKGROUND The United Sovereign States of Russia, or USSR, is the world's only remaining superpower. Russia is a capitalist country, and leads the capitalist "eastern bloc" and "warsaw pact". On the losing side was the United Socialists of America, or USA, which is in the process of collapsing from a Communist into a Capitalist state. HOW YOU DO Games will progress in "turns" that will be a 'quarter' (of a year) long each. Generally, deadlines will be a day or two or three (depending on how active people are) during which you do things. What you can do is very open. You can campaign to the public (which means posting in the forum thread). Other things you can try to do, but are not limited to doing, include: Trying to influence a MP Trying to influence an important person who is not an MP (such as an army General) Contacting/influencing a foreign government. These are all done by talking to me personally. I can be found in the #Goonstation IRC, and I'll pay attention to the Discord as well, and will be checking forum PMs. You can also talk to one another. That's kind of the point of the game, so please do so. check out the board game Diplomacy which some have described as RISK meets CHESS. It has 7 players. The point of that game is that the 7 people playing all do 3 things; work with other players, lie to other players, and backstab other players. The objective in that game, and this game, is the same. The game ends when one person "wins" There are a few ways to do this, ways you'll see happening in neighbouring nations. Here are 4 suggestions: 1 - Democracy You can start a political party, and run in open free and democratic elections. To do this you will first need to convince the sitting Parliament that a multi-party system is best, then you will need to run in, and win, an election (or multiple elections) Steps you'd want to take are: Convince the MPs to start a movement for democracy in Parliament and get 50%+1 of its members to vote for it. Start a party. You can either do this on your own, or working with one or more other players. In which case all the players that are members of the party would play as that party. Alternatively, you can try to take over and democratize the Communist Party itself; this is easier to do if other players leave it for their own parties. Next you will want to win elections. You'd do this by campaigning in the thread (I will simulate the electorate). Last, after winning one or more elections you will want to knock off all your opponents. One way to do this is to hit them with scandals to force them to retire, or, if they are in your own party, outmaneuver them. 2 - Stalinism You can strengthen the existing communist party. Doing this will require the Parliament to officially reject the request for a democratic nation, and so you will want to push Parliament towards that sort of vote. Steps you'd want to take are: Quash any democratic movements among Parliament, the public, and the other players. Killing them is one way to achieve this. Continue to build up your own keys to power so that you and force other players into retirement, or, just flat out kill them when possible. Pass laws through Parliament that reverse progress in "civil liberties" and bring back control over the state. Ensure control over government departments as well as the armed forces. And finally, when you think your power is strong enough, purge all opposition. 3 - War Things begin very badly, the government will need to make drastic budget cuts, which may well cause mass protests and riots. Chaos is a good time to overturn the political order and control over the Police, Guard, and Military. With enough control over these forces, and some bloodshed, you can come out on top. Steps you'd want to take are: Find people with martial power and befriend them. This may be Generals, Police Chiefs, Mayors, etc, as well as foreign powers. Use those hired guns to fight against the hired guns of other agents (IE players) and defeat them on the field of battle. Stamp out opposition with the butt of a rifle. Crush your opponents under the tread of a tank. 4 - China Like the "Communist" China that we know today, you could try to keep the Communist Party together, while liberalizing the economy. This would clearly be the most stable route, and would probably lead to the largest economic growth. Steps you'd want to take are: Ensure economic reforms pass Parliament but political reforms do not. 3 words: Trade, Trade, Trade. The best way to start would be manufacturing items for use in the rich Capitalist "Eastern Bloc". Ideally, you want to flood Russia with small cheap trinkets with small "MADE IN PEI" stickers on the bottom. Stamp out corruption within the party itself. Note: This is the most likely to result in a non-solo win. IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE GAME TO END IN A JOINT VICTORY, BUT ALL REMAINING PLAYERS NEED TO AGREE. A few things just to be clear: This is set in PEI. A Province of Canada, but alternate history. There are very few russians here. Please do not pick a Russian Name as the "character" you are playing. Feel free to invent a name for this person, and, to select a real-world person to be your "Avatar" so that news stories can post pictures of "you" doing things. Example: Jim Runson 43 years old Barrister Joined the Communist Party through his Father Known for being a reformer who supported the "democracy" idea. or Jane Kennedy age 38 Lifelong Party Activist Recruited into the Youth Wing of the party after being recognized as skilled in Political Class in High School. Known hard-liner who often praises the dictators of the past. If it helps, many last-names in PEI are English, Scottish, Irish, and French in origin. Popular last names include... MacDonald Desroches Arsenault Gaudet Gallant Brown Casey MacLaughlan Fox MacKay Aylward McIsaac Compton MacDougal Lawson Lord White Clark Grant Lea Crane Greenan Shea Deighan Murphy Kelly Walsh RE: The Island: A Post-Communist Simulation (forum game) - cyberTripping - 11-13-2016 This is interesting. Idk if I'd be able to play because I dont think I'd have the energy, but I'm looking forwards to seeing it unfold. RE: The Island: A Post-Communist Simulation (forum game) - TheNewTeddy - 11-13-2016 A few more clarification points There are 7 players and 7 titles. I'll give everyone a 24 hour "grace period" when the game begins to decide all of this, once that is done, I'll accept what I've been told everyone's title is. That also means that if you get to me first after that and lie about it, that the titles you assign everyone will become official, as, that's what reported in the press. When you sign up to play you should include either a picture or a name of a person you which to be your "avatar" so that I can add pictures to news stories (in fact, it's wise to do both, as, I may not know who you your person is) as well as the following information: NAME AGE OCCUPATION MEMBERSHIP (how and when you joined the party) FAME (the political things you are know for; IE are you a reformer, a hardliner, etc) Next, "updates" to the game will come in the form of official news. The first update is here: ============================================= October 1st 1990 POLITICS 7 new members have been elected to the Politburo with terms starting in the new year. They will preside over what will be an independent country after Parliament voted to break with Canada earlier in the year. We will present profiles on each member as they become available. MEDIA As instructed by Parliament, THE SPUD presents its statement of assets. THE SPUD is the only legal media outlet on the Island. THE SPUD has 1 Television station, callsign CBCT, based in Charlottetown. A Re-Broadcasting tower, built in 1987, exists in St. Louis in Prince County (Western PEI). Broadcasts begin at 5am and end at 2am. THE SPUD has 2 Radio stations. CFCY, based in Charlottetown, which can be heard all across the island due to the high broadcast power, CJRW, based in Summerside, which can also be heard across the island, but which, since the liberalisation of the media, has been recorded as difficult to access in the eastern parts of the Island. THE SPUD has 3 Print editions. The Flagship THE SPUD with a print run of 50,000 domestic, is published every day and delivered free of charge to all resident households, and workplaces. SUNDAY which is a weekly publication focusing on international news. And LIFE, which is a magazine published monthly, and is focuses on arts, culture, and is targeted towards tourists. ECONOMICS The budget for next year is projected to have a revenue of $1,200,000,000 and expenditures of $3,600,000,000. Also on the economic front, the now famous ship, the Slough, remains in port in Charlottetown. The ship, which officially belongs to Great Britain, has been unable to sail for that nation due to the violence in its homeland. The ship carries gold, valued at around $800 an ounce, or, $25,000,000 a tonne. The ship is famous as it carries 320 tonnes of gold, the entire British reserve. The ship was on its way home from the USA when the civil war broke out. The crew, noting the situation at home, has asked for asylum, and has been assisting the government in whatever the government has asked of of them. While Britain has requested the ship be returned, it is busy fighting its own civil war, and has been unable to effectively do anything to enforce this demand. Unemployment has fallen to 21% in the latest reports. Tourism numbers are way down due to the revolutions across the Western World. ============================================= Note the real world price of gold was close to $400 US; you can use this as a guide to help you figure out money. You'll notice those budget numbers. You'll also notice a lot of gold. I'll tell you right now, flat out, that the consequences of not returning the gold will be very, very low. In effect, this gold is yours to play with, and it will run out eventually. This gives you $8 billion dollars. Depending on how players react, I may also allow you to pick a cabinet among Parliament. If I do this, I will include the names of certain Parliamentarians, as well as some of their stats, like, are they competent, corrupt, good public speakers, etc etc. RE: The Island: A Post-Communist Simulation (forum game) - TheNewTeddy - 11-14-2016 I noticed there was some confusion. As such I created an entire example game on a throwaway forum. Note the game will be played here. Signing up to the throwaway forum only gives me your e-mail and IP address. http://thenewteddy.freeforums.net/board/1/general-discussion RE: The Island: A Post-Communist Simulation (forum game) - cyberTripping - 11-14-2016 You've won me over. Consider me in. Profile: Pétain Name: Yves Devereux Age: 49 Occupation: Architectural engineer Party: "Inherited" from father, fucking nepotism Ideology: """Demsoc""", believes the left could handily win and that a "democratic" system could quell public unrest RE: The Island: A Post-Communist Simulation (forum game) - TheNewTeddy - 11-14-2016 approved RE: The Island: A Post-Communist Simulation (forum game) - TheNewTeddy - 11-14-2016 Some lore: MILITARY AIR FORCE In 1989 negotiations began on how to divide the Canadian Military. It quickly became clear that PEI would be given no modern heavy equipment. Negotiations would see enough equipment for a large army, guns and other arms for a full 10,000 soldiers, but PEI specifically did not request any ships, tanks, or aircraft. Rather, oddly, PEI requested the contents of the "National Defence Museum" in Ottawa, arguing it planned to use it for Tourism. Museum curator and PEI local, James Reddin, had run the museum from 1944 through to 1957. Reddin, who though elderly, was still alive, told the government something that was not widely known. Everything in the Museum was taken as-is. Nothing was disabled. Nothing was a replica. Doing so would have increased costs. Once this was revealed in mid 1990, much of the equipment was sold back to places like Ontario, but a number of important pieces was kept, including... 1 P-51 "Mustang" Fighter-Bomber, designed during WW2, built in 1944 https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/24/F-51_in_Puddle%2C_Korean_War.jpg/800px-F-51_in_Puddle%2C_Korean_War.jpg 24 PCF Mark III "Siwft Boats" last used in Veitnam, built in 1971-1973 http://swiftboats.net/images/PCF694.jpg 36 M3 Half-Tracks, used during WW2, built in 1941-1943 http://military-vehicle-photos.com.s3.amazonaws.com/3047.jpg The Military has taken to referring to these as "Tanks" The money from the sale of the remaining equipment was used to purchase 18 modern Blackhawk helicopters. These are "utility" craft and would be better at, for example, attacking civilians than it would be at defending against an outright military invasion. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/01/Blackhawk.jpg/1024px-Blackhawk.jpg As well, there is a W54 Nuclear Bomb in a glass case in the basement of Parliament. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d9/Davy_Crockett_bomb.jpg Nobody is quite sure if it's a replica, or a real nuke. If it is, exploding it might cause the following http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/?&kt=0.02&lat=46.2349844&lng=-63.1261361&airburst=0&hob_ft=0&crater=1&fallout=1&psi=200,20&therm=_2nd-50&zm=15 There is a very long-standing rumor that moving the bomb could trigger it, and an explosion that destroyed the Parliament buildings in Cardiff, Wales, in 1962, happened 15 minutes after Parliament had agreed to remove the bomb in it's basement. There was a wire leading from the bomb to a direct line to Washington DC. This was common to all such bombs in Canada. After one was examined in Quebec City, it was determined how to safely disconnect the bomb from it's line, and so Washington no longer is able to detonate the device. However, wires connecting the bomb to the frame remain, and are suspected in causing the Cardiff explosion. This equipment is shared between the the Navy and Coast Guard (which, for all intents and purposes, act as a single unit) As well as the newly formed Police force (as the old Canadian police has been withdrawn, with their equipment. The old strategy was to never use local policemen to ensure government control, so, hundreds of Island born policemen have returned home, but without their equipment) and the Army (which, again, for all intents and purposes act as a single unit) And the newly formed Air Force, which operates all Helicopters and "Entirety of the Fixed Wing Fleet" One Russian analyst said of all this: "Any invading force only has one thing to worry about and that's the Blackhawks. While the Mustang and Swiftboats could cause problems for an invader who does not expect any resistance, any foreign armed force would likely be ready to fight back. Despite this, these armed forces are amazingly well equipped to fight back against citizens, and with the massive over-abundance of guns, which are uncommon among the citizenry, could maintain a civil war against itself if it so choose. Any war that lasts longer than a day will show that the half-track, though ancient, is amazingly useful. The fact the vehicle can reach the speed limit on the highway on this Island also means it's deployment would cause minimal disruption." RE: The Island: A Post-Communist Simulation (forum game) - Ultimate Shrek Fan - 11-20-2016 I would like to point out that in PEI french names are anglicised. For example, Gaudet would be pronounced "goodie" and Arsenault would be pronounced "arsenal" or "aresenald". This has no bearing on the game, PEI is just a weird place. RE: The Island: A Post-Communist Simulation (forum game) - TheNewTeddy - 11-21-2016 Whelp. This thread has just been defeated in the battle for replies by the latest non-corporate spam thread containing a squashed wrestler. Given the clear lack of interest I'm going to close the game down, for now. I may re-activate it later but it'll almost certainly be with a different ruleset. oh I forgot, I wrote this in advance Turns out it was an active Nuke, but, it was also a dud. http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/?&kt=0.00025&lat=46.2349844&lng=-63.1261361&airburst=0&hob_ft=0&crater=1&fallout=1&psi=200,20&therm=_2nd-50&zm=16 Parliament has been destroyed, and anyone in it, is dead, including the person who triggered the bomb. The building has collapsed in on itself. A few windows in neighbouring buildings have been damaged, but the most widespread problem is radiation. Hundreds in nearby buildings are now dead, weather or not their bodies have come to terms with that fact, and about 5,000 have been admitted to the hospital. |
