Skotcher | Ovaline Gray/3NT's Mentor Application - Skotcher - 01-26-2026 Usual character name: Ovaline Gray, 3NT, Clay Brzyski (Formerly) BYOND username: Skotcher Discord username (if you are on our discord): Skotcher Recommended by (if applicable): Oblivisteam (Rolf Shepherd) & Telerati (Ranni Stella) Goon servers you play: Primarily Lower pop (Currently Goon 3), occasionally high pop (Currently Goon 4) Reason for Application: Simply put, I want to help others learn and grow. This game has so much depth to it. Mechanics that can look simple on the surface may have deceptive amounts of depth to them. Many roles can have a low barrier to entry and a high cap for mastery. This game thrives on experimentation, creativity, and collaboration. I want to help guide others along in their journey as they play. But just teaching people isn’t the reason why I want to don the purple name; I want to be a positive force in the community that makes others feel like they are welcome in this community and will be cared for during their time here. Many moons ago, when I started learning all the various departments, I had tried botany several times and had a miserable time. I read the wiki, I asked others in the department, I tried and experimented, but I always walked away at the end of the round feeling like the department was not for me. I couldn’t understand what to do, how to contribute to the round, or how to progress my own learning. That was until I had a round with a beady eyed orange Saurian that smells faintly of cheese. While Richie Cheasedust isn’t a mentor officially, he stood out to me as a great example of what a mentor is: he guided me through the growing pains, let me experiment and fail, supported my ideas and my growth, was forthcoming about the limitations of his knowledge, and was always a friendly face whether I was in botany or not. He was my mentor in hydroponics and because of him, botany became one of my favourite departments. In turn, I’ve had the good fortune to help teach botany to many others. I aspire to be a mentor for others in the way that Richie was a mentor for me. Regardless of what role I play, I aim to be a person who will gladly adapt what I’m doing to include others in my gameplay and will endeavour to always be available to help anyone, newbee or veteran alike, learn something new about this silly game. Game Experience: I believe my areas of expertise are Botany and Toxins. In both of these areas, I feel confident that I have a deep understanding of the underlying mechanics, could answer simple and advanced questions alike, and have innovated in those areas. I have experience with nearly all the standard roles available to me and feel confident that, at minimum, I could perform every role and answer basic questions. More specifically: Command: I have played all command positions except for HoS/NTSC. I understand the responsibilities of each role and what unique tools these roles have access to. While I don’t specialize in playing command, I like to think that I have a decent concept of how to approach each role and could guide someone new to the role both in and out of a round. Security: I’ve played both security officer and security assistant several times, and I am passingly familiar with Detective. I think I could guide a new security assistant on how to perform their duties, what tools they might have access to, and how to handle conflicts/engagement with antagonists. I am less familiar with detective and while I feel like I could answer some simple questions, I would defer to others expertise there. Security is a department I enjoy, but it’s one I take frequent and long breaks from because of the toll it takes. Research: Toxins is my baby. It was a subdepartment I walked into with no prior knowledge, then tried and experimented until I found success. I’m proud to say that I’ve taught many aspiring scientists the fundamentals of toxins and guided them as they made their first bomb. The other subdepartments, like chemistry, artifact science, telescience, and guardbuddies are not my speciality but I do have significant amounts of experience that I could teach any one role to someone who was new or was looking to learn the mechanics. Medical: Genetics, Robotics, and Medical are all roles I’ve had the pleasure of playing in numerous rounds. I understand how to treat many different ailments, how to perform various surgeries, how to construct and repair cyborgs, and how to delve into genetic code. I have taught medical trainees how to perform all the vital steps of triage in order to save a patient. One of my favourite rounds was during lowpop hours where I had rolled traitor and spent most of the round teaching a medical trainee how to do emergency doctoring. I provided a final exam by shooting the only other doctor twice with a Derringer and getting them to use their newfound skills to save them (they passed with flying colours). Engineering: My first home. The first department I ever learned was engineering. I remember learning how to do hellburns and pipeburns for the TEG while experienced CE’s and Engineers showed me their ways. I eventually migrated away from engineering to experiment in new departments, but it still has a special place in my heart. I’m well versed with the subdepartments, but if my time in Engineering has taught me anything, it’s that there is always more to learn. You can not know it all, and you will learn, master, forget, re-learn, and re-master. Engine, repairs, atmospherics, mechanics, cargo, mining; if there’s something to be done in engineering, I’ve likely fiddled with it at some point in time. I feel very confident that I could do a comprehensive teach of each role, and can answer simple and complex questions should they be asked. Civilian: This is where my favourite department is: Botany. Oh Botany, how I love you. Amanitin + Cloaked Panellus nettles, maxed out Maneaters, immortal Suspicious Tomatoes (these suck but oh boy are they funny); if there’s a way to commit some sort of terrible crime with botany, I’ve probably done it. But I also really love making flowers and a farmer’s market, and sending medical omnizine, synthflesh, and pentetic acid by the drum. For Botany in particular, I think I could safely call myself a master of that subdepartment, but I know that there is always more to learn. My experience with the other subdepartments varies. I know Rancher, Chef, and Janitor fairly extensively and could teach players how to play the role or answer some more advanced questions. My experience with Chaplain, Bartender, and Mail Courier are on the lighter side, but I know the basics and could get players started with the role. Staff Assistant is a “what you make of it” kind of job that I know I could help with if needed. Clown is perhaps my least experienced role. I would save clowning questions for others, but I aim to try more clowning in the future. Silicon: I’ve played both AI and Cyborg and know how challenging these roles can be. I have a lot of time playing as both, and I enjoy playing as consistent named silicons as well as random named ones. This is a role that I think I could teach any player how to play and become familiar with the particular challenges both roles entail. I like to think I have a strong understanding of AI laws, the way they are ordered, and how they can be changed/altered/interpreted. Silicon is a role I very much enjoy because of how unique the role is and how it behaves in a way unlike any other job on station. It is a role that thrives on creative interpretation and grants you freedom to act in the round as an ally to all to help tell a greater story. Antagonist: While not technically a job, I think it’s still important to include. I have played all RP enabled antagonists and have had the privilege to be a Nuclear Operative/Commander during admin events. I know I could help answer questions about the mechanics of each of these roles, how to escalate, and could guide any player along while trying their hand at a bit of criming. I’ve happily taught newer players how to terrorize the station when they’ve asked for some guidance (and often times have helped them kill/eat me when I’ve noticed I’ve been stung/glared but they are struggling with figuring out the mechanics.) I wouldn’t be able to answer questions about Classic only antagonists and would save that for mentors more experienced with those roles. In summary, I’ve delved into many roles across the station and am always happy to set aside some time to teach others when they ask. I think it’s important to find the right balance between teaching and allowing others to learn on their own. I always try to set achievable goals for others when teaching them something and am there to provide additional support should it be wanted, but I also try to encourage others to be independent and learn to do the role in their own way. I know that others can always teach me just as much as I can teach them. Previous bans (while this will not affect your application lying about it will): None |
