New Gimmick Job: System Administrator - SkinChanger - 01-24-2026 Ever wished someone could figure out what's wrong with your TermOS or ThinkDOS? Well that sounds like a job for the System Administrator, a.k.a the sysadmin! A highly decorated veteran of both Wheel War II and the Editor War, the sysadmin is the foremost expert onboard for computer systems and tech support. They might just seem like a nerd in a hoodie to the layperson, but make no mistake, they're a force to be reckoned with online (once they finish recompiling their browser). Role The sysadmin manages the mainframe and its attached devices, ensuring continuous operation and security. But isn't that the job of the RD, you may ask? Well technically yes, but the RD almost never does it, so that's why they hired the sysadmin! The sysadmin would be part of the random gimmick job pool, as their role is fairly niche. Access The sysadmin has access to:
Note that some access levels may need to be reworked to implement this properly. Gear The sysadmin spawns with a hoodie, a Network Diagnostics PDA cartridge, and a pair of Packetvision HUD Glasses. Implementation I'm open to changing many parts of the sysadmin, as all I really want is some sort of gimmick job for using TermOS and Packets. I'm also willing to learn BYOND and implement the sysadmin myself, as I myself am a nerd in a hoodie, much like the sysadmin. If you have any feedback on the sysadmin, please post it here! RE: New Gimmick Job: System Administrator - Chasu - 01-25-2026 I like this idea as a gimmick job! Medical already has a "Medical Specialist" gimmick job, so why not let Engineering have their own specialized nerd? It'd be a good role for experimenting nerds to play without taking up a slot of more "critical" personell, such as engineering. RE: New Gimmick Job: System Administrator - flyingcow01 - 01-25-2026 I had the exact same idea in my head a while ago, would be great for engineering to have a dedicated gimmick job for learning how the computers work. However I'd only suggest a name change as I believe an "administrator" could be mistaken by someone for a command member. Perhaps a "network technician" or similiar? RE: New Gimmick Job: System Administrator - aft2001 - 01-25-2026 Network Technician / IT Professional / Cybersecurity Expert / System Operator. A lot of gimmick jobs have some name variation so these are some possible ones. I do also agree with the idea that including Administrator could lead to confusion, so yeah axe that. Other than that, yeah I like this idea. RE: New Gimmick Job: System Administrator - SkinChanger - 01-25-2026 Just for context, the name "System Administrator" is a common term in IT. I think it's fitting, but it's not an integral part of the concept. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_administrator RE: New Gimmick Job: System Administrator - SkinChanger - 01-25-2026 I've created a draft PR at https://github.com/goonstation/goonstation/pull/25725 |
