Vanni's Mentor Application - Spyritdragon - 09-22-2025

Usual character name: Anya Sardy, Ila Lotch, Chiri Artima, AMASI, Captain Rambutan
BYOND username: Spyritdragon
Discord username (if you are on our discord): Vanni
Recommended by (if applicable): Varshie, 444explorer, Diacorme
Goon servers you play: All RP servers, classic on the rare occasion

Reason for application + game experience (300 word minimum):
Applying:
I love helping people, plain and simple - I want to help them enjoy the game I love, and feel at home in our community. And while I can and do enjoy doing this whenever I can in-game already, I feel myself both limited by the scope of what's realistically achievable on the RP servers I usually play on without breaking character or leaving my lane, as well as having a solid amount of time to otherwise help where I can't quite be online in-game itself.
I find SS13 to be a wonderful game like very little else that's to be found out there, and within it as I've dabbled in other codebases I still find Goon to easily be one of the most accepting and accessible places to anyone. It's a wonderful place to play that I've spent hundreds and hundreds of my own hours having fun on, and I want to help support that and help show other people why I love this place so much. There are so many things that are so in-depth and fascinating about this game that I'd love to help introduce people to.
But beyond just the game, there's a community here I'm incredibly fond of, and I like to think over my time here I've developed a solid understanding of what can help make a game fun for everyone. If there's a way to help welcome other cool people to our little niche community, I want to help contribute to that.

My experience:
In my time here, I've spent at least some time in most departments, and like to think I know the game pretty well - and the bits I don't know, I'm usually in-the-know enough to be able to find out the information in short order. I'll try to keep it brief-ish!

Medical: Easily my most experienced department, I know the medical system inside and out. I won't say there are zero surprises left to me in there, but it's been a very long time since I've encountered a medical question I couldn't answer.

Security: I have a decent amount of time in security - I'm no HoS, but I have a solid grasp of the practicalities of security play, and I believe I know how to help people strike a good balance between having a satisfying security experience while keeping the game fun for the antagonists, too. People generally seem to consider my judgements fair and appreciate the leadership I can give, which is easily what I value most from my time spent in security.

Engineering: I have a very solid understanding of engineering - I can put just about any part of the station back together to near-mint condition, know a good amount of MechComp, and while I don't know the ins-and-outs of the nerdy levels of power, I've repeatedly instructed people on how each type of engine works, and know more than enough to set them on their way to trying fancier setups. I'm also familiar with both mining and quartermastering on a pretty decent level.

Science: Probably the department I have the least experience in. I'm very familiar with the chemistry system, but the fancier details of artifacts and azones are still exploratory territory. I'm familiar with the basics of both though, can show people how to get to azones or get them on their way with artifacts - and for more complicated questions, I'm not afraid to refer to others who know more. I feel like most of the stuff I don't know though are the things that players will have fun discovering on their own.

Civilian: I've spent a decent bit of time as a janitor, know a decent amount of botany, and have done a good measure of chef-ing and some bartendering - definitely confident I can help people on their way with each of them.
I'm not a terribly experienced staffie though D:

AI/Silicons: I have extensive experience playing silicons, and can confidently help people on the way with the practical sides of each, and have helped plenty of borgs on their way as a roboticist. I have a good grasp of the particularities of the laws, and most people generally seem appreciate my handling of them, while at the same time, I like to think I also have enough experience to know when something should probably be forwarded to the admins instead.

Command: Mostly an extension of each of the other roles, I've successfully taken charge of medical and engineering, as well as having some experience on captain, where people generally seem to look up to me and find me a pleasant presence.

Syndicate and other troublemakers (GASP!): I'm not a fantastically experienced antagonist, but I've spent at least a few shifts as most antagonists, more as some than others, as well as having encountered all to varying degrees as security. I can answer most basic questions about the practicalities of it all, and like security, think I'm generally pretty good at helping guide a round in a way that makes for good fun for each side regardless of experience level. I'm definitely a medium-robust, by no means an expert, but I know enough to help antags that are struggling a bit with some pointers or helpful hints.

Previous bans (while this will not affect your application lying about it will): No bans I can remember - one stern admin message at some point

If you've made it here - thank you for reading this far! I'm always happy for feedback, be it positive or negative 💛

RE: Vanni's Mentor Application - Angel - 09-22-2025

I can't really say much about your in-game presence, as I believe we have not interacted much/at all in-game. I will say though, I don't believe I see you very actively teaching people and answering questions in the discord, maybe you do it more in RP chat? But I definitely believe you should be more active in the questions channel.

RE: Vanni's Mentor Application - Ragemorrow - 09-23-2025

Vanni has always maintained a well-meaning, polite, and patient demeanor when I've observed them. Every interaction I've had with them inside of game has mirrored those observations, even when I'm testing out a new blorbo. And every interaction outside of the game has been of the same quality.  The breadth of their teaching I've personally witnessed has been in engineering; where I've typically seen them helping the odd engineer learn the basics, or set up some weird contraption.

I recall a specific moment with Ila as an officer. Where she played along with my goofy wild west gimmick while I was an antag; allowing a good amount of banter back and forth before ultimately helping in bringing me in, while, after catching me, Ila gave me the option for a lengthy interrogation to flesh out the roleplay, or a quick process to get back to the game.

The goal was always to maintain a fun environment for all parties; So I see no reason they shouldn't join the cheese pits

+1.

One of the kindest players on the server, genuinely! Vanni is incredibly patient and was one of the people around when I first got my feet into Medical and the game as a whole. I would not be as good of a (role)player without their help. While not often in the questions channel, Vanni is regularly in the rest of the discord and I've seen you help out quite a few people before in game!

As guessed by my name being in the application, I would like to see you be a part of the team. +1
