Sandy Desmond Mentor App - Vulwin_Gilran - 09-12-2025 Usual character name: Sandy Desmond (or random name silicon) BYOND username: Vulwin Gilran Discord username (if you are on our discord): baconb01 Recommended by (if applicable): Largeamountsofscreaming Goon servers you play: 3 & 4 Reason for application: I enjoy answering questions and explaining concepts that I am passionate about (which is most stuff in goonstation). This means when I have the spare time I often check into the questions channel on the discord. I love answering questions especially about projects, as I get to just wonder what they are working on and I might even get to steal a nugget of their enjoyment when I see the result of their work/gimmick and I can think to myself "I helped that happen". And becoming a mentor lets me have access to a direct line to people who are asking questions, which I think would be neat. Experience: Research: Research was my first love, I learnt the game playing it and I am confident that I could guide someone through any of the facilities of research. I am very fond of chemistry, and I know from experience its incredibly easy to get overwhelmed from the sheer quantity of recipes there are. My favorite thing to do with research trainees is take them on a short tour of the different areas and show them interesting little things to spark their curiosity. Medical: I have played a lot of medical, as a human and as a borg player and personally it is my favorite field to teach. Whenever I teach a trainee in medical, the shift always flies past in a blur, and its always great seeing a trainee leave a shift knowing more about a department than when they started. I also can explain how to operate a gene console and I am able to aid roboticists in processing their dear borgies requests. Engineering: Engineering is a perfect department for engaging with people who are working on projects, and as I mentioned before I love it when I can help someone realize their project. I have a strong grasp on singularity, reactor, and geothermal engine concepts and I understand how to explain the setup procedures for the TEG, but I don't have a clear understanding on the more advanced TEG concepts. I can also do some basic mechcomp, like automating the Reactor turbine, and I could teach someone how to break into invite themselves into the armory with packets. I know the mining loop and how to avoid getting mauled by nanites or hugged to death by eels (though lets be honest dying horribly is the fun part), explaining the kinds of materials to look out for to make tools with (or to do a funny gimmick with) and how to make cash processing requisitions, selling to the market, and contacting traders. Civilian: Botany is great to work in, since you are surrounded by players who are usually experimenting and developing their own projects which you can collaborate with. In botany I can explain all the basic concepts like stats, mutations, and nutrient types and the more wild splices. I enjoy playing chef and bartender roles, and can explain the mechanics and machines needed (and direct to the most important resource of all, the wiki). If anyone needed help figuring out tips around ranching I would also be able to lend a hand! Security: I have played a LOT of security, and I enjoy teaching assistants when I can. I understand the mechanical gameplay of security and the social side. I do also have to say nothing makes you prouder than seeing a secass you trained swirly their first clown. Command/silicon: I often play command roles and I know how to operate the programs like bankboss, rolecontrol, and commaster and I know the chain of command. I play a lot of AI and cyborg, so I know all the tips and tricks for keybindings or even things like bugging intercoms. I am also very well versed in interpreting and writing AI laws. Conclusion: I have gotten a lot of knowledge about the game by playing it, but I also constantly make use of both the wiki and code-diving to help me answer questions to the best of my ability! Previous bans (while this will not affect your application lying about it will): none! RE: Sandy Desmond Mentor App - Largeamountsofscreaming - 09-12-2025 Been a great personal help to me figuring out some things about engineering, always generally been both kind and knowledgeable. Answers questions often in the discords and giving them the grounds to help more people with their questions would do this community some good, +1 RE: Sandy Desmond Mentor App - Munien - 09-19-2025 Always a friendly and helpful presence on the discord, offering help and answering questions. While I can't say much about their ingame presence, their attitude and activity on discord is enough to make me think they'd make a fantastic addition to the mentor team. Very knowledgeable about a number of mechanics and the game as a whole. RE: Sandy Desmond Mentor App - joshie_bwoi - 09-24-2025 Very active in the Discord, jumps at an opportunity to teach newbees, knowledgeable, even-keeled. Love having them around. Endorsement from me. |
