Character Inspiration From Other Media - t0tino - 08-24-2025 Hey guys, T0tino here, first post! I'm currently writing a backstory for Piper Boucquet which is leaning heavily on Risk of Rain lore, with the end goal of hopefully intertwining that with SS13 to make sense. With that in mind, do any of you have characters with lore contrived from other games / books / etc? How much of it do you let bleed into your roleplay, and how much of it do you change to fit with SS13's (admittedly loose) narrative? Are there certain no-no's to keep in mind, other than blatant plagiarism and metaknowledge? I'd love to hear all of your thoughts! RE: Character Inspiration From Other Media - laugoose - 08-24-2025 i mainly just name characters after media i enjoy. giselle blanchette is named after giselle from aespa, but her personality is generally separate from anything i have seen giselle do IRL you should be fine to base ROR on a character in any context (not just ss13, also RP groups or other media) but remember that the best part of making a character is engraining them into the lore. you get to ask questions about how they came to be, how they'd act, why, and how they treat other people by tinting the lens with lore. a character that you know is stuck up, missing something in her life or always bored in a place where, say, music is banned, would be energetic, popular, and creative in a world where music flourishes. when you have (for lack of a better term on hand) isekai type characters who are not familiar with the base world (which mainly just includes Nanotrasen or plasma) the fun is a character dealing with adapting and doing perhaps comical no-nos like murdering animals they would perceive as hostile who are just fluffballs or fucking up their job/speaking with unneeded respect/disrespect. keep in mind this is all from a view of someone that does more textrp than ss13, and the lore here is super loose intentionally to allow for a wide range of characters. i think the most important thing to ask in terms of a character here is why they decided to settle into a corporate job- a character that is a world famous athlete probably wouldn't just become a janitor or scientist, but might be forced by their "handlers" to embark on the station to record a show or educate people on self defence. an action packed thrillseeker akin to nathan drake probably wouldnt enjoy being forced to become a staff assistant to, say, pay off their exorbitant loans for crossing half the galaxy in search for the Cintamani Stone, and might seek adventure where there isn't any like one-lining a changeling or robbing the evil police force (security) if they were an antag. the goal is to have a character that comes from a unique walk of life be stuffed into a probably draining job and seeing how they act. best of luck with your character and please do write a big profile on their lore. id love to read it ![]() |
