Optimisation appreciation thread - Drunkangel - 08-17-2025 Goonstation has been running a lot better recently, I say recently as in the last 5 years or so, because I started playing 5 years ago and I vaguely remember things like lag both client side and server side effecting combat and interaction, hitches, space lag, general slowdown when things got chaotic (ESPECIALLY when things got chaotic) and server crashes. And no these things aren't gone but they're certainly much much less. Sometimes people mention things being worse before as well, and man am I shocked at how much people have done to improve things. People have put so much effort into improving this game and I just wanted to make a positivity thread focusing on that and making sure they know they're appreciated, even when working on the ways that aren't flashy. I invite people to thank those people making the code cleaner, specific names or just in general. And I invite the coders to come in and say "You're damn right I've done a good job" and mention specific things they're proud of. Because you should be proud! And I wanna hear from you about it! As I'm posting this I may as well start off; I'm not a coder, that stuff hurts my brain, every now and again I try to pick up things to contribute and often get distracted by other hobbies and real life. But I look at the pull requests and I've seen so many optimizations, code cleanups, and whatever the official term I probably am getting wrong is for people just making things run cleaner under the hood and preventing crashes I didn't even know possible. And if it's running better enough that when I think about it, I can notice it. I can't imagine how many times you've improved the playing experience in ways I haven't consciously noticed, but still matter. So other maintainers and contributers have an easier time maling those changes qol additions and optimizations. Sometimes a big and tedious undertaking that isn't felt by the majority of players. Our coders not just improved that, I am around since 2019 and man we got so many reworks, like the surgery one (my personal favorite). But also new things, like the nuclear reactor (also my personal favorite) And then there are all the sprites that were improved, from crunchy to polished Thanks for all and everything, we are lucky to have you! (PS, of course the administration deserves recognition to, being the second half needed to keep Goonstation playable.) |
