Makeshift Scrap Shield - tamakona - 05-11-2025 Hello. I would like to discuss the idea of a makeshift "scrap shield" item. I understand that some of you may already have thoughts upon reading the title and the first sentence of this post. And that's exactly what I am looking for. The purpose of this thread is to gather information, suggestions, and feedback on what the community envisions would be an ideal version of the idea. If you believe the game is better off without the idea entirely, then I would gladly welcome an explanation why. It's not absolutely necessary of course, but it helps with clearing out how the community feels about the game, which helps regardless of whether the idea eventually gets added or not. Point is, give feedback pls ty The following are my initial thoughts on the subject, and my vision for such an item. Oh and as far as the forum search bar and player projects discord thread goes I haven't seen anyone else suggesting this item so....*shrug*. Why do we need an item such as a makeshift scrap shield? The station is chock-full of ways for civilians to form a small militia in case of security falling somehow. Bread knives, kitchen knives, the Engineer's whole toolbelt, good ol' classic toolbox and fire hydrants, and the recently added slam-gun and scrap weapons just to name a few. You'll quickly notice they're all stabby, cutty, bludgeony, and shooty. There's not much difference between the killer on station and the killer of the killer on station besides their affiliation. That's why I believe the good people on board SS13 need a strictly defensive option that is less overt about grief. How would such an item be designed? Well, as mentioned before, in my opinion it has to be strictly defensive. It can't outclass sec gear, because duh. In fact, I believe it shouldn't be any better than any other scrap gear or makeshift option, so think sidegrade more than anything. It should be an alternative option for people who want to protect themselves over just stabbing the bad guy. That said, my *current* vision for a scrap shield would be: 1. Two handed 2. Doesn't fit in backpacks 3. About half the damage reduction of the security barrier 4. The special summons a 0.2 second reflect window that bounces back kinetic projectiles, with a 30 stamina cost and goes on a 3 sec cooldown so you can't gamer parry the NukeOp's entire clip some of you may point out that i can't code. and that's fair but i'm the type that literally will never learn anything unless i have an end goal and having a cool idea usually makes me learn 3x faster so eh might as well RE: Makeshift Scrap Shield - Lefinch - 05-11-2025 It's not -quite- the same thing, but this thread shows perhaps there's some basic impetus (as well as potential issues) around the same concept: Improvised defensive items rather than offensive. I'm clearly a fan with the basic concept and you've thought through some of the things to help balance it. I still think it's a good idea here as I did for the similar concept before, and my thoughts remain pretty much the same. |
