Nerf mining hammers (in combat) - Mikeistaken - 02-16-2025

Alright I'll start off by saying that, no I don't think the mining part of mining hammers needs to be nerfed and just the combat part. The mining part is in a good place as is I feel like

First off, the mining hammers are easily produce able by mining, I have no issue with this as it's the middle ground between gauntlet and pickaxe, my main issue is with the special attack...
The hammers special attack hits in a 3x3 area in front of it except the diagonal tiles next to the player
It's fine and all because it makes it unique, however the issue comes with it's additional stat on it to stun your opponent for 1 second.
This is an issue because while the hammer has the longest special attack cooldown, you can chain hammers, causing another stun within 1.5 seconds. And when pinned on a wall, the attacker doesn't even need to move as their target is stuck 3 tiles away and can't even get close because hammer also has knockback!
And finally if those where not strong enough reasons the hammer is one of the few weapons in the game that can attack through walls, providing a pure safe place for the attacker to get hits where attacker also can't get hit....
I will now provide problematic scenarios that could possibly appear in game

1. Nuclear operatives have boarded the station without a marksman so they cannot attack through walls, and in an enclosed space to help funnel people into 1 entrance, however a miner comes up with 3+ hammers smacking the guns out of the operatives hands through the walls, and when the nuclear knight tries to ambush the miner the miner pins them on the wall without their weapon then proceeds to kill them with it.
Causing the nuke to die in record time

2. An officer is chasing you down while you have a gun on you, they puts up their barrier to attempt to deflect the shots but miss time it, now you rush up to them and knock both the barrier and weapon out of their hand, causing them to loose the fight and you get more stuns on future officers and more bullets for them to deflect to start the cycle again.

3. A traitor with a c-saber runs up to you, attempting to kill you, you hit then once with the hammer and now the fight is already almost a garenteed victory.

TLDR: a mining tool should not be powerfully enough to counter most of all antagonists arsonal and some of security's gear

Huh. That was not an intended interaction (juggling items to bypass cooldowns). Itemspecial cooldowns will now be tracked on a per-mob basis for any given type of special, rather than individually per-item: https://github.com/goonstation/goonstation/commit/71766f675ab3260bb77cb2309825ed8b74636875

Ah, I swear I bug reported that a couple years back, but it coulda gotten overshadowed or sum

But some of my point still stands, as an instant stun weapon, you can convert any enemy weapon into your own with 1 well timed special attack, I may do some testing later if I feel like that was enough though

You can easily dodge the special by moving around the target. There are plenty and to sone degree more effective instant stun weaponry, mining hammers are kinda unused for the fact that you're a sitting duck after the attack (the dual wield nerf makes sense)

And well, if minings best weapon are hammers, they haven't done their job particularly well.

the special attack as stated before, I find can be quite hard to dodge, however now that you cannot chain hammers anymore the slowdown penalty actually has a use taking its course, however I still feel its very powerful as displayed in this video, https://youtu.be/maz0Efr5ZFw
because its still an instant stun/makes person drop their weapon allowing you to steal it to give you a possibly high advantage. I still stand by me thinking this should be nerfed
