John Walker's HOS application. - FP250110 - 02-14-2025 Usual character name: John Walker BYOND username: FP250110 Discord username (if you are on our discord): N/A Recommended by (if applicable): N/A Goon servers you play: Sylvester Reason for application: When I first wanted to join Goon station, which was about 2022, I wasn't allowed to, the servers denied all VPN connections, and since I lived abroad, I didn't have a traditional fast and legit way to connect to goon station, I've tried a multitude of space station 13 servers, all of the which, were fine, but never did catch my attention, whether it was a toxic fanbase, hard mechanics, or just full blown degeneracy, I never did find the energy in myself to keep playing space station 13, even though I've spent multiple years on the franchise, exploring. I've made lots of friends, connections, taken inspirations, enjoyed the thorough, engaging but still simple story of the game, and have come to appreciate it as a true cult classic. In the short time I've been in goon station, I have made lots of memories that I have never made in other communities, everyone was welcoming and eager to teach me back when I was a new bee, just a few weeks ago. I've gone forward to try and make this application to show my appreciation, even though it's not been 3 months, I already feel like I belong here, and I want to make other new bees belong here too, I have spent a decent amount of time getting familiar with everything, and I do understand that being a head of security involves lots of quick last-minute and sometimes even round altering choices, and i can say with true dedication and belief that I feel confident I can tackle it. Security experience (300 word minimum): I've played security on a ton of different servers, mainly about Goob station, I don't find much difference, i find the bits of realism into being an officer the most appealing about the roles, I started out as a security assistant, I found the prospect of de-escalation cool, as well as interacting with my fellow colleagues to keep everyone safe from workplace accidents, or the maniac running around with an automatic shotgun. Later on i tried the detective, I loved it, I found the Noir movie inspiration brilliant, since it builds up on character development options, and even back stories, this has to be my favourite role, as it also involved more technical actions, such as forensics. I find the security officer also an okay role to play, although some times the intense standoffs with criminals and the such fall onto you as the main protector of the station, I found it all right, but my favourite thing about the security officer was how menacing they can look at times, as well as how customizable your OC can be. But what i like most about the security department, not just in Goob station, but almost everywhere in SS13 and 14, is that nothing can be done alone, not as a security officer, it requires team work, and lots, lots of team work too, that's when i decided that security was for me, i've been active ever since, I've learned many things, and most importantly, me and my fellow officers, and everybody else were treated correctly and had fun. That's what kept me engaged as a security officer. Answer two or more of the following:
N/A Shit i posted twice, sorry. RE: John Walker's HOS application. - Lefinch - 02-15-2025 Hey, I'm gonna go with this incarnation of your double application. If you haven't contacted an admin already via a ]report on discord I wouldn't worry too much, MyBB is a pain in the neck and you're not the only one who has had to fight it to get an application in the right place. It doesn't in my opinion affect your application unless it makes it completely unreadable, which isn't the case here! ![]() I really like the positive attitude in the application and you've been honest about your freshness to playing too. Because we haven't had much time to get to know you, it's difficult to make any kind of assessment about what you might bring to being a HoS. You've definitely done some security shifts so it's very possible you've already managed to develop a positive rapport with some security players who will give some feedback here. It might help to have a good idea of what you want to be a HoS. I appreciate you say you've enjoyed playing here, but being HoS isn't a natural chain of progression for just having fun. Plenty of people really enjoy playing the game who would neither want to or be suitable for being a HoS. You can, if you haven't already, ask around the HoSs we have and understand that while the role can be very fun, I doubt any of them would say they couldn't have the same kind of fun for far less effort in many other roles. However, if you had a more specific reason for wanting to apply I'd love to hear that as well and it might help inform others looking at your application. My other question is that you cover that you've played all of the security roles and in other servers, which is definitely good to know. It's a bit vague to me what kind of experience you have with goonstation in general though. Everyone picks things up at different rates so 3 months isn't really the issue to me, more that given we've not had much time to get to know you, or at least I haven't (and I hope to!) the application doesn't fill out the missing details: Do you feel like you understand enough to do what a HoS needs to? Things like how the chain of command works with command staff, why that funny surgeon might want to do your appendectomy in private. Not universal knowledge by any means, but just if you feel that you've got a good handle on things enough that you can help lead your security team. Good luck in the application! RE: John Walker's HOS application. - FP250110 - 02-15-2025 Hello, thanks for replying, as well as being understanding with my application. To answer you, yes, i do feel as i am fairly experienced in command and security standpoints, in the meanwhile of playing in goonstation i've familiarized myself lots, and i feel like (even though kind of fresh to this server) i have a fair amount of skills, because of my long experience of space station 13 as a whole, but to answer your questions. For question one, you say that HOS is not a chain of progression for having fun, I agree completely, and understand that HOS can be a straining role, and I don't view it as a position I'm seeking for pure fun, I'm unsure if I've covered this in the application but I had a reputation in SS14 (which had very similar security mechanics, you could say they're basically the same, other than the variations in space law.) of helping security assistant catch their ropes with pretty much anything they didn't know about, which I really enjoyed doing. For your second question. I am aware that I might not have cemented myself with some parts of the community, as i do have my own little time zone (CST, offset GMT+8) but i do have a fair bit of experience with some of if not most of (pop caps at 70 when i play) the players here, and have never had a bad or frustrating experience. I hope this answers your questions, if you have more, don't be afraid to ask, i hope we can meet in game some time in the future! RE: John Walker's HOS application. - Lefinch - 02-18-2025 It does, thanks! I'll try and catch you around ![]() |
