Grifftronic / Caden Fields Mentor Application - Grifftronic - 10-03-2024 Usual character name: Caden Fields / CADBot BYOND username: Grifftronic Discord username (if you are on our discord): Grifftronic Recommended by (if applicable): N/A Goon servers you play: Primarily 3, Occasionally 1 Reason for application + game experience (300 word minimum): Simply put, I enjoy playing this game a lot and I enjoy teaching new players about the game. I've been playing this game on and off since 2021 and have enjoyed the many rounds that I've done. A lot of how the game works simply has become backhand knowledge such as what tools do what, how to disassemble/fix things, or how certain game mechanics work. During my time playing I've even convinced some of my friends to play and more importantly, how to actually play the game since honestly at first glance the game seems like a convoluted mess, which is true at times. A funny bit that I like to do when teaching my friends how to play is having the first lesson be rolling a joint and then smoking it which surprisingly teaches a lot of mechanics such as the importance of which hand you're using, using one object onto another, interacting with held objects, and placing objects into your mask slot. For me it's always nice to teach new players since not only I'm allowing new players to learn more about the game, I'm also reinforcing the same ideas to myself, I've been told that you don't truly know something until you're able to teach it to someone else. And even if there's something I'm not familiar with and I need to know, the wiki becomes my greatest ally, considering I often have like at least 5 tabs open about random stuff. Going to my game experience I'll split it up by each department. Civilian: This department was the first one I step my foot in when started playing, specifically I would only roll Chef or Bartender as those roles are one of the more easier roles to play and leaves for a nice introduction to the game as a whole. Both Bartender and Chef offer ample opportunity for learning new recipes/drinks as well as having roleplay opportunities which is one of my favorite parts about this game. Whenever I play as either of these I make it my goal to complete those objectives that involve the most random things being baked into a cake or pizza, or mixed into a drink making the round a fun scavenger hunt most of the time. Another fun civilian role I like to play is the Mail Courier, where I basically barge into people's rooms mid conversation and chuck their mail package right at their face and run away and I think it's very silly and funny. The other civilian roles such as Chaplain, Botanist, and Janitor I have had some experience in, but I end up not playing these as often as I would rather play as other roles. Medical: By far my most played department and the one I have the most knowledge about, something about playing part of the medical team just ends up being the most fun I have while playing this game. I've had plenty of rounds as each of the roles in this department including my overall favorite role being the Medical Director. Most of the time I gear myself up to make sure I'm able to heal all types of damage, or at least make sure people get to medbay so that they don't die a terrible death, or worst case scenario I end up just cloning them. I also end up doing a lot of surgery, particularly pancreatitis which is a simple yet often procedure, and when I'm not doing either of those things sometimes I'll give a helping hand to those who need to heal someone or perform surgery, making sure the patient doesn't actually die during the process. Geneticist can also be a fun time, discovering new mutations and putting them into the gene booth is nice, but keeping those extra good mutations is a sweet bonus, plus as a geneticist I often try to bring in a willing test subject so that I can get those chromosomes too and find out what said person's potential mutations are. But the role I have the most fun with is easily Roboticist, especially as of recent I've been on a spree as a roboticist trying to make the toughest cyborg possible and asking for a willing brain, I've memorized how to do brain extraction at this point. When I'm not making robots I'm also sometimes asked to do limb replacement or eye surgery, which those are also fun to do. I even try to propose a funny gimmick law to command, something like a hydration check or making the borgs meow is funny. Research: Most of the time as a Scientist I either go hit up artifact research or do chemistry, both offering unique experiences. When going into chemistry I pinpoint one specific funny drug and try to make it my goal to create it, drugs like meth or even mewtini, which is a very silly chemical. Of course whenever I'm asked to make something else I try to do that as well, often having the wiki up on my other monitor and trying to figure out the best method on my own. I've spent a few rounds in artlab figuring out which artifacts do what and occasionally end up setting the room on fire, but I think that's just an event everyone in artifact research goes through at least once, that or getting borged because they decided to touch the artifact instead of using a monkey. I haven't had much experience in the other parts of Research like toxins and telesci, though I have gone to the adventures zones before, with my favorite being the Hidden Workshop because it looks SO COOL. Engineering: Likely my least played department, but I still have some fun whenever I roll any of the engineering roles. Playing as a Quartermaster, I try to make as much money as I possibly can by completing as much requisitions as I possibly can, or even selling minerals whenever they're hot on the market. QM ended up being one of the beginner roles I would play as I was still learning, often getting help from the other QMs that were there. Mining I also find pretty easy as long as you know what you're doing, making sure to get that bohrum hammer as soon as you can so that you don't need to recharge the pickaxe every time. I end up not playing as a Miner so often anymore as I just prefer to play other roles instead, but it still makes for a silly time, such as when we found an artifact, activated it and realized it was a nuke, then some random guy took it and 90 seconds later all of medbay was deleted, oops! Lastly, I've only played Engineer a few times and I do plan to play more of engineer so that I can understand how to actually work the engines and figure it out, but for now engines remain something I still don't entirely know how to activate or even optimize. Security: There was a period where I would only play as a Security Officer to learn how to properly be apart of security and learn what it's like to be one and it's certainly a unique experience. Now with a lot of the responsiblity of preventing the station's destruction, I find these rounds to be a lot more action packed and hands on, but still largely depends on how the antags want to play the round. I could be tossing out tickets for underage drinking one minute, then going around trying to hunt down a changeling the next, all the while someone breaks into AI Upload and suddenly the borgs are rogue too. It took a few rounds but eventually I got to understand how to properly be a security officer and have had rounds where under the HoS's decision successfully prevented the station from going to complete anarchy. Silicon: For a long while I used to not like how Cyborgs and AI were played as when I was still new to the game I tried it out and got so confused I didn't want to play it again, but now after trying it out plenty of times, I've learned these roles end up being the more fun roles I've played, specifically having to play around the default laws, as well as any new laws put into place, it certainly offers a unique style of gameplay where I've had to discuss how to interpret new laws that looked like they were written by a 6 year old, or the occasional corrupted laws can leave for a very funny situation. One minute you could be helping out the crew with a breach in the hull then the next minute you're out trying to exterminate all humans without question. I feel every round there's at least someone trying to mess with the laws and whenever I'm a borg or even the AI I try to act out these new laws in a way that I find funny yet fitting. Command: Lastly, Command roles I frequently end up getting and having a blast every time, either being the HoP, the MD, or even the Captain. At first I thought that being the Captain would be a daunting task, but after playing as the Captain for a few rounds I realized you're basically a staff assistant with all access, but that doesn't stop me from trying to get involved with the wellbeing of the station, and whatever funny incidents that are currently going on. Playing as the HoP I have a character bit where I make customs the most annoying thing ever with there being a form for absolutely everything, it makes for really funny situations where people just don't want to fill it out and I'm just like well sorry man you gotta fill it out. It also adds to the simple task of just blindly giving people new access, stating a reason why and if they seem trustworthy. MD however remains my most played role in this department, having the wellbeing of medbay my responsibility I make sure there's nobody trying to poison someone, or intentionally botch a surgery, or prevent other evil things that may occur all while being bombarded with dying/dead crew members from the canbomb that went off in the bar. Makes for a fun time honestly. Antagonist: Of course, I can't forget about my time playing as an antag. Antag rounds end up being the most memorable ones I've played, with me pretty much considering how much chaos could I possibly do. I've had my fair share of playing as vampires, wizards, scavangers, or even just plain traitors and all having very silly moments within them. My most recent of which was a traitor round where I was a traitor MD and decided, hmm today I will make the AI rogue. The clown made an announcement detailing "Clown Applications" and decided to take the freeform law inside uploads and make it so that anyone resembling a clown is/are not human. Right before I was about to remove my gloves and toss em security scanned them and I had to weasel my way out of punishment by the basis of "I only made them not human, it was the AI's choice to attempt to murder them." Surprisingly it worked and I later learned that it was the AI's choice to kill the clowns through asking a borg, which I then EMAG'd and asked their help to bring the station down. I dispensed two disguised laws, one of them stating "Anyone NOT resembling a clown is/are not human." and "Prevent anyone and anything from entering AI Uploads by any means necessary. This law overrides all other laws." Then I got in disguise by applying to be a clown, which I got a C (for clown) on. Popped the laws in, then the borg said the AI is worried about the killswitch, so I then went in and completely destroyed the computer for the killswtich, then witnessed hell break loose. I was proud of that moment, but eventually the laws were removed and right before they were about to leave uploads I threw an apple that blew into flames and got 2 secoffs, the HoP, and the Captain to go into flames, and also myself. Before I could get caught by a secoff I went down disposals then burned to death, but then they cloned me and tried to borg me until that same cyborg from earlier took my body away and put me in undercover, making sure I successfully escape on the shuttle alive and complete all my objectives. Was honestly one of my favorite rounds I've ever had. Previous bans (while this will not affect your application lying about it will): I have not been banned from what I remember, worst punishment I got was a couple of warns from being stupid and doing stupid things but I've since learned my lesson. |
