Hey everyone,
Was having a discussion in the Fish Content Expansion Thread on Discord and we were thinking of a way to make fishing more useful and cross departmental.
The best way I thought of was to make Fish Oil (a currently useless medchem), more useful, if not reworked entirely so that fishing and getting fish for departments becomes a norm.
Please reply with your own thoughts and ideas, the best ideas win and get implemented by fish enthusiast coders!!
Current Fish Oil chem: "+1 blood if under 500u of blood, -1 blood if over 500u of blood. 4% chance of decaying into up to 2 units of cholesterol"
Ideas we had to make it better:
For a medchem:
- Atm it decays into cholesterol, however in real life it's meant to treat it, this should be fixed to lower units of cholesterol overtime.
- Based on IRL facts, it can also cure blood clotting, heart disease, and can treat depression to an extent, this could be developed into a few ideas:
- Could be used increase units of blood in a person better than it already does.
- Could be used to prevent/cure heart disease, or cause it if you overdose.
- Could give a small boost in making a player "happier" or something more physical (slightly increased movement, emote text idk).
- And anything else related to those, or something completely different, idk skincare or something!
Other Uses we thought of:
- Can be added to food and drink to make it extra salty, might cause some dehydration?
- Can be used in Chemistry as a substitute for the regular Oil chem, allowing for easier chem manufacturing without making oil yourself.
- Overdosing on it can make you unable to breathe air, and have to either go out into the Oshan, or build yourself a fish tank... or keep drinking water? Maybe fill O2 tanks with water??
- Overdosing could alternatively give you the squid mutation.

As the one who made the fish oil chem, many things attributed to fish oil in real life are just... food myths. With most sources on the wiki page you yourself cited showing conflictive results, going from minor to no benefits. To paddle to the myths around fish oil (and to not just add another useless food chem), i gave it a small effect. But in essence, fish oil is simply pure fatty acids (although a good amount of essential ones), and with every fat-chem in ss13, we show this via the decay into cholesterol, which is minor.
What i could see, though, is the further refinement of fish oil into medical chems.
