Mental Health and Goonstation - Largeamountsofscreaming - 01-22-2024 IMPORTANT PREAMBLE: I AM NOT BY ANY METRIC A MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL. THIS IS BASED OFF OF MY EXPERIENCE WITH INTERACTING WITH GOONSTATION AS BOTH A PLAYER AND COMMUNITY MEMBER. THIS WRITING IS TARGETED AT NO ONE AND IS MEANT TO BE A PERSONAL SUGGESTION FROM ME TO THE COMMUNITY ABOUT WHAT HAS HELPED ME FEEL COMFORTABLE PLAYING. IF YOU HAVE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES, PLEASE SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE. Goonstation is a community that I have almost only ever had wonderful experiences with. Making stories with characters and even other players has been an amazing experience to be a part of, and I've enjoyed growing as a community member. A few players have even become good friends, and I couldn't be more grateful for what they've offered for me. It's an experience I want as many people to have, as well as for them to offer their own experience and ideas to the melting pot that is Goonstation. Unfortunately, due to the unique nature of SS13 as more of a cult classic and with a tighter knit playerbase, there comes with it unique problems that aren't present in other games that I know of. For some playing Goon, especially new players just getting invested, there can exist a certain parasocial relationship with the community and game as a whole that can eat at the enjoyment of playing. Social and performance anxiety and other fears are natural things that happen when playing Goon, and I believe it is important to remind players that such feelings are valid and not something to fight or ignore. I would also like to take the time to offer a few things to help soothe those issues and solve them so those players can focus on enjoying the game again. Who is this PSA for? I understand that a lot of people playing this game have a fairly healthy relationship with playing Goonstation and interacting with its community. This may very likely be fairly unnecessary for you, and if you are happy with how you feel in the community, I happily encourage you to keep at it! For some others, this game is a very different social experience, and it is easy for them to start to form bad habits in relation to the community. For some, it is about performance and fame, being as valuable as possible to as many people or risk fading into obscurity. For others, they might find themselves causing a parasocial relationship to the community, using them as a coping mechanism for health issues rather than seeking professional help. Whoever you are, if you recognize that Goonstation is causing distress, I offer my perspective and experience on the matter Common Issues
THIS LIST IS BY NO MEANS COMPREHENSIVE, AND IT'S POSSIBLE YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT PERSONAL ISSUE NOT ON THIS LIST. That is okay! Humans are varied, emotional creatures, and you could experience many different concerns. Just because I did not outline it doesn't mean that it doesn't matter. I simply wish to make it clear that your emotions, whatever they are, are something that someone else has experienced and are recognized Things to Remember If you recognize these issues are starting to harm your enjoyment of the game, I think there are a fair few things that you can forget in the process. It is too easy to fall into a negative feedback loop, only noticing and thinking things that fuel your issues. As such, try to remember these things
What to Do Taking a few steps to address these issues that you might have with the game can be much more beneficial than you might realize. Even just being able to breathe and recognize that you got a little closer to understanding your relationship with Goonstation makes it that much easier to enjoy.
What you shouldn't do
Other smaller points to make
Why I made this I've been playing Goon for almost 2 years now, and in that time I've grown so much as a player and a person. The reason I try to be so thorough in my descriptions of these dos and don'ts is because I've made so many of these exact mistakes. It's something that had killed my enjoyment of the game for longer than it should have, and recognizing those issues and putting effort to fix them is what made me love this game. The community is full of wonderful people, and I can only encourage you to join in the fun. My hope is just that even one person has found value in something read here and takes it to heart, either for themselves or a person in need of it. Even I can see that this whole PSA is a bit of an odd thing to have for SS13, but all too often have I seen people lose themselves in this game and become extremely anxious. I don't believe that mental health relative to this game is a non-issue, and even more so for Goonstation just because of how inclusive it is and how friendly everyone is. Thank you for reading this, I hope that this guided you on a path to joining in the fun! RE: Mental Health and Goonstation - EristheSlackWyrm - 01-23-2024 Thank you for making this PSA. As someone with a serious mental health diagnosis, I sometimes find myself bringing parts of that diagnosis into the game or discord, despite being aware and vigilant to prevent it. It just slips in occationally, no matter how hard i try to keep it away. I keep saying this and i mean it. SS13 is the Best and Worst game of all time. It has given me some of the most fun in social gaming I have ever experienced online, and at the same time, has been the most mind destroyingly frustrating game that makes me rage quit in unnappealing ways. Ive met some of my best friends on goon, online and IRL friends at this point. And seen some absolutely horrendus betrayals in the Goon Community. SS13 is a great game, but I cant belive i can say with confidence: its risky to play it if you cant stay alert about how much its swallowing you. Ss13 is a cryptid. a Fae. Yeah it might be fun, but wow it can drag you into some pits. And I dont think its healthy for everyone. I definitely believe this is a very special community with some specific and unintended side effects, and let it never be said I haven't done most of these lol. I'd say most of the reason I made this personal guide is to remind people that losing yourself in these behaviors is what makes the worst moments playing this game. It's always important to remember this game shouldn't be hurtful or competitive, but fun! RE: Mental Health and Goonstation - Kotlol - 01-23-2024 Here's a lil tip for everyone (especially on the Roleplay servers): DO NOT ROLEPLAY AS A CHARATER THAT REPRESENTS YOU! It might have a part of you, but never have it be more then 10%-20% yourself. The more it's you or a loved one.. the more heartbreaking and disturbing it gets. I for one play several charaters. A hive of "Selena James" roach charaters with all different personality traits who all believe they are the roach goddess. Though they do not act on it much anymore unless it feels fitting. A calcium obessed cow with a green afro and beard. Means very well. A skeleton guy who is... mostly normal till his head is off. Abit of a multitasker. A depressed man who will be the most miserable and depressed at his job. Mostly a clown.. a sad clown... cause sad clowns are FUNNY! (I play this one the least, his name is Exten STAN ial. Or just Stan.) The reason you avoid being yourself or someone you care for in game... when you are in the wrong headspace, their fate to the game can be soul crushing. While the reverse can be funny... being your worst enemy and throwing them into awful death after death after death to laugh can help.. but is not a good coping mechanism... Roleplay as a charater who is fun and fits in. And most importantly... keep ties of real life out. Not only is it better for yourself.. but keeps the immersion stronger. Keep this game as detached from reality as possible for your own sake! RE: Mental Health and Goonstation - Terms-On-Dragon - 01-27-2024 It definitely can get quite tempting to associate a character with another person or oneself, to which one method I use is to simply distance oneself from the character by referring to them in third person instead of first person: for example, "Wow, Kigz really was a monster that round. He absolutely ate everything in the kitchen." As fun as goonstation is to play, there are other games as well to enjoy. What makes an experience dull is if it is constantly repeated, instead of adding some variety on how it is done, or simply taking a break and try out a different medium. For the most part, I have gone through some of these unhealthy habits before, and plan on changing them as to truly enjoy Space Station 13 without seeing it as a chore nor as the only place to hang out with friends. Perhaps the initial excitement of playing the game will return after spending some time away from it. I also have some bad news... I just lost the game :[ RE: Mental Health and Goonstation - riolusx2 - 02-28-2024 This. As somebody who has had this exact mental health situation and had it end horribly (currently permabanned lmao), your advice would have helped a lot. After my permaban, I took a step back and quit ss13 for about a year or so. I eventually slowly stepped back in and I'm currently in the process of appealing. I'm back now and active on /tg/ station manuel (shout out to anyone who recognizes terry genkins), and i've learned from my mistakes. Here are some tips to keep yourself from ending up like me: * SS13 is not the most important thing ever. If you are that obsessed with it that you play it as much as I did, you probably have other problems. * Find something else to occupy your time that you can put passion into. I recommend ff14. I bought it immediatley after I left, and it significantly helped. Remember, the internet is infinite and if you get tired and bored of one source of relief, there are about 15 trillion other sources out there. I've since gone inactive on ff14, but I'll be back for dawntrail. * The other players are not npcs. They are people, and have feelings too. * If you are alone for most of your shift, something's wrong. SS13 is a social game, remember that. * If you do come back after a long break, do it slowly. I started with watching videos of ss13 again, then playing on new servers, then playing on servers I used to regular, and now I'm here making my appeal. * Get mental help. No seriously, a therapist is more qualified to help with your problems than I am. * Finally, remember. There is always somebody who will care about you. |
