Edit: I've been informed that this function already exists via an unintuitive grab with a breath mask and air tank in hand, oh well.
Imagine you come across someone who is suffocating in the vacuum of space or in the ocean and you don't have much time to act. There's not much you can do, really.
What if we could combine a breath mask with an emergency O2 tank to create a little apparatus that you can use on people to give them a few cycles of air from it? You wouldn't be able to wear it, and it wouldn't be as reliable as a normal breath mask + o2 tank, but it could help save someone's life if they're suffocating and there's little time to get to a safe place. You could disassemble the apparatus by clicking on it in hand to return the two items to their previous selves.

A more intuitive way of doing this I think would be to make it possible to open the tank valve while the mask is in your hand (not just your face) and then, as you can guess, placing the mask in your hand and then clicking on the intended recipient.
The less intuitive one you edited into the OP is indeed unintuitive... I probably would never have discovered it if you hadn't just mentioned it here.
