When you get the matter eater mutation, you can eat almost anything.
When you use the 'Eat' command, it brings up the list of items you can eat. Selecting 'cancel' sets off the recharge timer. Eat nothing, and have to wait.

This should no longer happen. Feel free to eat entire jumbo butterfinger blizzards without any consequence.
